The global transfer spending record has been broken this summer, according to figures from Transfermarkt. Football clubs worldwide have spent a combined £6.56 billion on 1,617 players so far, surpassing the previous high for a single window of £6.51bn set in 2019. The Premier League is comfortably the highest-spending division, with £2.1bn invested in 269 players over the summer months. Chelsea have spent £359 million on new signings, and that figure could rise to around £400m if a deadline day deal for Cole Palmer is completed.

Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood will leave the club after both parties concluded it would be inappropriate for the forward to continue his career at Old Trafford. Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 for allegations including attempted rape and assault, but the charges were dropped in February this year. Man Utd said in a statement: “All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. “It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.” In a statement, Greenwood accepted he had “made mistakes”, but added: “I did not do the things I was accused of.”

Goalkeeper Ben Foster has retired from football for a second time. The ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Forster walked away from the game last September but was convinced to end his retirement and sign for Wrexham in March. He has now called time on his career following a difficult start to the new campaign. Injured Lioness Beth Mead has revealed her devastation at not being at the World Cup this year alongside her teammates. The Arsenal player ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament last November, and didn’t recover in time for the tournament, which saw England make it all the way to the final alongside Spain. “It’s been a tough tournament to sit there and watch the games when you know you could’ve possibly been involved”, she told Sky. “I’m full of emotions.”

Felipe Massa’s lawyers have started legal action against Formula 1 and the FIA over the 2008 F1 title loss to Lewis Hamilton, seeking substantial damages following that year’s “Crashgate” scandal. Lawyers acting on Massa’s behalf allege that the former Ferrari driver has been “the victim of a conspiracy committed by individuals at the highest level of F1 together with the FIA and Formula One management.” Massa missed out on the 2008 title in dramatic circumstances at the final race in Brazil as Hamilton – then driving for McLaren - claimed the point he needed on the final lap in wet conditions. “Crashgate” rocked the sport when the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix saw Renault’s Fernando Alonso win the race before it emerged that his team-mate Nelson Piquet Jr. had deliberately crashed to bring out a safety car that played into Alonso’s hands. That safety car prompted a Massa pit stop that Ferrari mishandled, with Massa eventually finishing the race 13th while Hamilton came home third.
