Eddie Howe says becoming Newcastle head coach was ‘life-changing’
Eddie Howe wakes every morning happy with the “life-changing” decision he took to become Newcastle’s head coach. The 45-year-old accepted the Magpies’ offer of employment in November 2021, just weeks after Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium had completed its takeover. Staveley and her partners will celebrate two years at the helm on Saturday with the club having been transformed to the extent that they sent shock waves across Europe on Wednesday evening with a 4-1 Champions League rout of Qatari-funded Paris St Germain. Asked where he would rank his decision to take on the job, Howe said: “I knew when I took the job – the moment came when I was offered the job and I was going to say yes – that it was a life-changing moment for me. “Thankfully it has been a great journey so far. I have loved every second of it. “I said when I arrived I was very proud to be Newcastle manager and I’ve never woken up without that feeling. The feeling that I am doing something very special in my life is always there and it’s never something I take for granted.” Howe’s decision thrust him into the centre of a geopolitical minefield and he has found himself repeatedly facing questions over the Saudi regime and its links to the club through the Gulf state’s Public Investment Fund, which holds an 80 per cent stake, and accusations of ‘sportswashing’. We’ve got to try to work towards that, and these things take time. There is no magic wand Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe PIF governor and Magpies chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan has made no secret of his ambition, saying in the Prime Video documentary ‘We Are Newcastle United’ that he ultimately wanted to establish the club as number one in the world. Howe, who met the chairman briefly after the PSG game, has been consistent in taking a measured approach to development despite hefty, if astute, investment in the squad since the takeover. But asked if there was any reason why the Magpies could not be the biggest club in the world, he said: “No, but we’re not the world’s number one club at the moment. “We’ve got to try to work towards that, and these things take time. There is no magic wand. Being smart, making good decisions and working hard every day… “If that is the ultimate aim, then we will try our best to try and get that. “We have to be calm and recognise we are in the early stages of the season. We’ve got a lot to prove before we can say anything about what we’ve done. We’ve just put ourselves in a good position in our Champions League group and we are still formulating our Premier League position.” That process will continue with Sunday’s visit to West Ham, a game for which Anthony Gordon is suspended after reaching five bookings for the campaign, while Callum Wilson and Joelinton remain doubts and Sven Botman is out. Anthony Joshua could fight on same card as Eubank Jr vs Benn, claims Eddie Hearn
Anthony Joshua could fight on same card as Eubank Jr vs Benn, claims Eddie Hearn
Eddie Hearn has suggested that Anthony Joshua could box on the same card as a potential clash between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn, with the promoter talking up the possibility of a December date. Briton Joshua has been in talks over a heavyweight fight with Deontay Wilder, though that bout now appears unlikely to take place in December – as was originally discussed – and “AJ” may instead box a different opponent at the end of this year. According to his promoter Hearn, Joshua could fight in Abu Dhabi on 23 December, possibly on the same card as a long-awaited bout between compatriots Eubank Jr and Benn – who is also promoted by Hearn. 23 December is one of the rumoured dates for Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk, the undisputed heavyweight title fight that was announced last week. Benn vs Eubank Jr was originally set for October 2022, but the bout collapsed just days before fight night, upon the revelation that Benn had failed two drug tests in the run-up to the contest. Benn, 26, was subsequently stripped of his licence by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) and charged by UK Anti-Doping (Ukad), though the World Boxing Council cleared the unbeaten welterweight of any intentional wrongdoing. Later, the National Anti-Doping Panel lifted a provisional suspension on Benn, though the BBBofC and Ukad have appealed that move. As such, the Briton is still unable to fight in the UK, though he returned to the ring with a win over Rodolfo Orozco in Florida last month. It is likely due to his inability to box in the UK that Hearn’s proposed super-card featuring Eubank Jr and Joshua would take place in Abu Dhabi. Joshua, 33, last boxed in August, knocking out Robert Helenius after initial opponent Dillian Whyte failed a drug test. After Joshua’s win, it was revealed that Helenius had also failed a pre-fight drug test. Meanwhile, Eubank Jr most recently fought in September. The 34-year-old stopped Liam Smith to avenge a TKO loss to the Liverpudlian. Click here to subscribe to The Independent’s Sport YouTube channel for all the latest sports videos. Dillon Danis denies claims he backed out of Logan Paul fight - live updates
There's much speculation about the future of Dillon Danis’s fight with Logan Paul, as the biggest feud in YouTube boxing took yet another twist. The pair are due to go toe-to-toe in the ring on October 14 – but not for the first time, fans have been wondering whether or not it’ll take place at all after Danis's latest post. There’s been a problematic build up to the bout, with Danis having been criticised for his treatment towards model Nina Agdal, who is Paul’s partner. After he posted old footage from her Snapchat account and shared posts of her with previous partners, the model filed a lawsuit against the fighter, saying she suffered "humiliation, emotional distress, and reputational harm" from the fighter's posts. In documents obtained by TMZ Sports, she went on to suggest that an uncensored photo from a "romantic encounter" over a decade ago has even broken laws. Now, Danis has been posting messages about possibilities of the fight not taking place at all, which have put fans on high alert. Here’s everything you need to know. However, Danis appears to deny the claims by posting a message stating his fight with Paul was still on. “See you October 14th pu*** boy,” he wrote to Paul. Danis tweets that he’s “out” of fight twitter.com The fight is still on, but fans were surprised to see a message from Danis that suggested he was backing out of the fight. Tommy Fury explains why he has ‘never been fan’ of KSI ahead of crunch boxing match
Tommy Fury has explained why he has “never been a fan” KSI ahead of their crunch boxing match. The pair will go toe-to-toe in the ring on Saturday 14 October at Manchester Arena. Ahead of the bout, Fury was asked if he “likes” the YouTuber turned boxer. “Not one bit,” he told BBC Breakfast. “I’ve never been a fan, I just don’t like the way he carries on, I’m not really about this YouTube calling out people, doing all this sneaky stuff. “I’ve got a job to do. My job isn’t to mess around on Instagram, playing games.” Fury also admitted that partner Molly-Mae “hates” boxing.
