Ferrari duo set early Singapore pace as lizards disrupt first practice session
Ferrari duo set early Singapore pace as lizards disrupt first practice session
Charles Leclerc led a Ferrari one-two in an opening practice session for the Singapore Grand Prix disrupted by three lizards. Leclerc ended the one-hour running at the Marina Bay circuit just 0.078 seconds clear of team-mate Carlos Sainz, with championship leader Max Verstappen third. Lando Norris finished fourth for McLaren, 0.172 sec back, while Lewis Hamilton and George Russell took fifth and sixth respectively for Mercedes. But the session was disturbed on several occasions when a lizard walked across the three-mile street venue. Verstappen was the first to report the reptile at Turn 9 midway through the running. “There is a lizard on track again,” said the Red Bull driver, who had a similar encounter here back in 2016. “It is a smaller one this time.” Verstappen’s race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase replied: “Maybe Godzilla has had a kid.” There was a second interruption, and then a third, as yellow flags were deployed. “Another lizard, but a different one this time,” said Russell. Verstappen, who is chasing an 11th straight victory on his waltz to a third world championship, warned on Thursday that Red Bull could be vulnerable at this unique street venue. And the chasing pack, led by Ferrari, will be encouraged that Red Bull did not have it all their own way in the opening running of the weekend. Sergio Perez, who won here last year, finished seventh, ahead of Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso. The second running gets under way at 2100 local time (1400 BST). EA FC and Football Manager break silence on Mason Greenwood dilemma
EA FC and Football Manager break silence on Mason Greenwood dilemma
Mason Greenwood will feature in EA Sports FC 24. That's according to Mirror Gaming, who were informed by EA Sports that the Getafe forward - on loan from Manchester United - will feature in the upcoming video game. However, he won't be available for selection in the popular Ultimate Team mode at launch after being left out of squad lineups in the series' previous instalment, FIFA 23. He'll also be a feature in the upcoming Football Manager 24. Greenwood has not appeared for Manchester United since his arrest in January 2022. The charges he faced were dropped just over a year later in February 2023 by the Crown Prosecution Service. Greenwood was facing charges of engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and attempted rape. With Greenwood set to return to professional football, his loan move to Getafe has proven to be a flashpoint in debates over the footballer and whether it is right for him to continue his well-paid career. It's notable that Getafe has gotten a number of facts wrong when announcing Greenwood's signing - making it clear that the striker was proven innocent and cleared in a court over the charges. This was not factual, as the case was dropped. Another flashpoint has erupted today, with news breaking that Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham apparently advised Greenwood to move to Spain. Greenwood will now be given a chance to continue his career, and arguments will rage on. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Everton sale to American firm agreed
Everton sale to American firm agreed
Farhad Moshiri has agreed a deal to sell Everton to American investment firm 777 Partners. The British-Iranian businessman, who owns 94.1 per cent of the shares, will sell his entire stake to 777, who have also invested in Sevilla, Hertha Berlin, Genoa, Vasco da Gama, Standard Liege, Red Star and Melbourne Victory. It will bring an end to Moshiri’s disastrous reign in charge at Goodison Park in which Everton have spent around £700m on players in seven years, only just avoided relegation in the last two seasons and are winless in the Premier League now. Moshiri, who has seemed short of funds since his long-time business partner, Alisher Usmanov, was sanctioned after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, had been searching for investors to help fund Everton’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, which will cost £500m and is due to open in 2024. He was in talks with American firm MSP Sports Capital and real estate tycoon Maciek Kaminski, but his initial plan was to sell a minority share. Moshiri plans to write to the club’s minority shareholders to seek their support for the deal, which Everton are confident will be ratified by the Premier League and should be completed in the calendar year. Moshiri said: “The nature of ownership and financing of top football clubs has changed immeasurably since I first invested in Everton over seven years ago. The days of an owner/benefactor are seemingly out of reach for most, and the biggest clubs are now typically owned by well-resourced PE [private equity] firms, specialist sports investors or state-backed companies and funds. “I have been open about the need to bring in new investment and complete the financing for our iconic new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, on the banks of the Mersey, which I have predominantly financed to date. I have spoken to a number of parties and considered some strong potential opportunities. “However, it is through my lengthy discussions with 777 that I believe they are the best partners to take our great club forward, with all the benefits of their multi-club investment model. As a result of this agreement, we have an experienced and well-connected investor in football clubs who will help maximise the commercial opportunities, and we have secured the complete financing for our new stadium, which will be the critical element in the future success of Everton.” Josh Wander, founder and managing partner of 777 Partners, said: “We are truly humbled by the opportunity to become part of the Everton family as custodians of the club, and consider it a privilege to be able to build on its proud heritage and values. “Our primary objective is to work with fans and stakeholders to develop the sporting and commercial infrastructure for the men’s and women’s teams that will deliver results for future generations of Everton supporters. As part of this, we are committed to partnering with the local community over the long-term, working on important projects such as the development of Bramley-Moore Dock as a world-class stadium venue, allowing thousands more Evertonians to attend our home matches and contribute to the economic and cultural regeneration of Merseyside.” Read More Are Everton the first crisis club of the season? Callum Wilson extends Newcastle deal
Callum Wilson extends Newcastle deal
Newcastle striker Callum Wilson has agreed a one-year contract extension with the Premier League club. The 31-year-old, who has been the Magpies’ top scorer for the past three seasons, is now committed to the Magpies until 2025. The England international has scored 40 goals in 79 league games since arriving from Bournemouth in 2020. That places him fifth on the club’s record Premier League goalscorers chart and with just eight more he would move up into second, behind only Alan Shearer. Wilson told the club’s website: “I’m delighted to extend my time here. “It’s a fantastic football club, I’ve been welcomed ever since I came through the door and now the club’s going in a fantastic direction and on a journey so it’s nice to commit my future to being a part of that. “We’ve got some great things to look forward to and I think being around here, the city, fanbase, is what players dream of so I can’t wait to be around for the next few years. “When I first joined the club, I had ambitions to come back to the Premier League having been relegated with Bournemouth and over the first few interviews I mentioned Europe and I mentioned getting to 100 Premier League goals. “They were ambitions of mine and they still are. I’m close to get into the ‘100 club’ and also becoming the second all-time Premier League scorer for Newcastle would be an amazing achievement, having looked up to Shearer for many years. “There’s so many fantastic names that have been before me at Newcastle – goalscorers who have worn the number nine – and it’d be nice to join them in the record books during my time here.” Wilson’s contributions helped Newcastle finish fourth in the Premier League and reach the Carabao Cup final last season. Manager Eddie Howe, who previously worked with Wilson at Bournemouth, said: “We’re very pleased because Callum has been an integral part of our success. “He’s an outstanding person, an outstanding footballer and I’m delighted he’s going to be with us for longer. “He’s an incredibly motivated person and I’ve never seen Callum not motivated to score goals. I think that’s a great thing for a striker.”
