Conor Benn may have one more hurdle to overcome in order to fight in Britain, Eddie Hearn has confirmed, despite the boxer being cleared by UK Anti-Doping this week. After Benn failed two drug tests in 2022, which led to the collapse of his planned bout with Chris Eubank Jr, the welterweight was cleared by the WBC earlier this year and by UK Anti-Doping (Ukad) this week. Benn, 26, and his promoter Hearn celebrated the Ukad ruling as the end of a saga, but the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) said in a statement on Tuesday (1 August): “We wish to reconfirm that the Ukad Rules which apply to those proceedings provide all parties, including the BBBofC, with a right of appeal. “The BBBofC takes all anti-doping matters extremely seriously and is considering the exercise of its rights.” Hearn then told iFL TV: “He’s cleared to fight in Britain, subject to the approval of the BBBofC, which is the next process to undertake. “I would like Conor Benn to go through the process with the board, and we’ll do that, and hopefully – after being cleared from the WBC and in that [Ukad] hearing – we can move forward with a licence. “Maybe [the BBBofC will appeal]. I can imagine the whole world and their dog is calling the board, telling them to appeal it. We live in a strange, strange business, but ultimately everything that has been asked of Conor Benn, he’s done. He’s been cleared by the WBC, the suspension has been lifted by Ukad. “It’s up to the board if they want to. We’re ready for everything. Wrexham’s Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been criticised by climate activists after it was revealed that the club took 16 domestic flights last season. The Welsh club earned promotion back to the Football League after a 15-year absence but while they flew to and from eight away games, no other National League club took a single flight for a domestic fixture. Research by the BBC revealed that most of Wrexham’s flights – to face teams such as Gateshead, Bromley and Maidstone – were out of, or back to, Manchester Airport, with the shortest lasting just 29 minutes while the average flight time was only 43.5 minutes. Flying to and from domestic matches is common for Premier League clubs to aid player recovery amid packed fixtures schedules but the environmental impact of short-haul flight have made them increasingly controversial, with green activists speaking out against the practice. For example, the Manchester to Newcastle flight taken for a game against Gateshead was a journey that would have taken around three hours by coach or two and a half hours by train. In addition to the 16 flights with the squad on board, BBC research also found 16 further ‘positioning’ flights – where an often empty plane is flown into the airport it is collecting its passengers from, creating additional emissions. Wrexham had been approached for comment by BBC Sport. Since Reynolds and McElhenney’s high-profile purchase of Wrexham, there has been a huge wave of interest around the club and this summer they embarked on a pre-season tour of the United States – packing out stadiums in San Diego and Florida for matches against the likes of Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester United. The Hollywood owners also flew the squad out for an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas to celebrate promotion. This all comes despite their mission statement on the club website that pledges a “commitment to a more ecologically-sustainable version of the club and stadium.” Environmental activists have criticised the club and owners for these practices, with Katie Cross, who runs the organisation Pledgeball that works with clubs to “engage fans and lower their footprints”, frustrated by their “surging environmental impact”. Cross said: “The club, with the full backing of their new owners, seem to be following the well carved out track of measuring success through global expansion and financial success. “Imagine the impact if Wrexham chose to prioritise environmental sustainability in their decision-making and used their huge profile to push it up the football agenda? It would be a game-changer and would cause heads to turn.” Meanwhile, Frank Huisingh runs campaign group Fossil Free Football and said: “Football has a clear interest in stopping the climate crisis from escalating further. It is therefore sad to see that so many young world-class players are asked to promote a very polluting activity like flying. “Wrexham AFC shouldn’t have followed their [Premier League clubs’] lead. They should do what is best for fans around the world and stop advertising air travel.” Reynolds and McElhenney have previously been criticised for flying by private jet to attend Wrexham matches and recently announced a new sponsorship deal with United Airlines. But the Secretary of State for Wales, David TC Davies, defended the owners. ”They’ve done a really really good job over the last few years and I’m certainly not going to knock Wrexham Football Club,” he said. “They’ve taken a lead in promoting football and promoting Wrexham, which they’ve done really well. “They are perfectly within their rights, perfectly within the laws. I’m sure they are aware of climate change but, at the end of the day, they’ve got to play football. Justin Gaethje has claimed that he has little desire to fight Conor McGregor, after the Irishman called him out in the aftermath of UFC 291. Gaethje avenged a 2018 loss to Dustin Poirier on Saturday, knocking out his fellow American with a stunning head kick to win the ‘Baddest Motherf*****’ title. And McGregor, as he so often does after major UFC cards, then took to social media to call out one half of the main-event fight. “I’ll slap you around,” tweeted McGregor, 35. “I KO him one shot. Guarantee it.” At the UFC 291 post-fight press conference, Gaethje was asked about the former UFC champion’s comments. The lightweight, 34, replied: “I think he’s turned me down six times. And usually you have to lose to fight him, so don’t know what’s going on. “I don’t know, I don’t really care. Whatever. I fight MMA, I like to fight big fights, I like exciting things, so it sounds pretty exciting to me. [But] I’m not going to fight someone on steroids.” Gaethje was addressing the fact that McGregor, who has never tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug, is currently absent from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) testing pool. McGregor is set to fight Michael Chandler next, but the Irishman must first spend six months in Usada’s testing pool and return two negative tests – and zero positives. As such, McGregor vs Chandler is still without a date and location. Gaethje added: “I’ve never taken steroids in my life, never will. Well, maybe when I retire, I might... but I’ve never taken steroids, and I don’t want to fight someone that’s cheating. And I probably shouldn’t even say that if I want the fight, but it’s the truth.” McGregor vs Gaethje is a fight that many fans have long wanted to see. Meanwhile, McGregor has fought Poirier three times. McGregor knocked out the 34-year-old in a featherweight bout in 2014, before suffering a KO loss to Poirier in January 2021 at lightweight.
