Footballer Joao Cancelo accused of looking ‘possessed’ during post-match interview
Barcelona footballer Joao Cancelo lit up social media after his most recent post-match interview – and not necessarily for the right reasons. The defender scored a dramatic late winner on Sunday against Celta Vigo, recording a player-of-the-match performance for his Catalan team. After full-time, Cancelo, 29, was modest about his performance, mentioning that he made “many technical errors that are not normal in my game”. “I had to improve and turn things around,” he told reporters. “I tried to give everything until the end and we were able to come back and to win is the most important thing. “If I perform, the club will love me. If not, they will kick me out.” However, rather than focus on his exceptional performance, many viewers were more fixated on his facial expressions during the interview. Here’s the footage: One person commented: “I’m convinced he's a vampire fighting the urge to eat that journalist.” Another wrote: “At first I thought this was a Snapchat filter.” While Cancelo quickly returned to normal after pulling the face, there was something rather bloodthirsty about it. Another person commented simply: “I’ve seen him in my nightmares.” The 29-year-old joined Barcelona on a season-long loan from Manchester City. Aside from the bizarre interview, he looks to have secured a place in Catalan hearts after the winner. Barcelona went down in the match, but managed to score one back through striker Robert Lewandowski. Then, with just one minute of normal time left, the Portuguese player sent the home crowd wild by finishing a second chance. Manager Xavi said: “We didn't play well (but) came up with the epic, showing winning character. “I think this generation fights until the end. What happened today is a tremendous turning point of winning character, we didn't play well but it's about character, faith, the epic.” Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Joao Palhinha’s stunning strike snatches Fulham a point at Brighton
Joao Palhinha scored a stunning equaliser as Fulham held Brighton and Hove Albion to a 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium. The Seagulls were the better team in the early stages and were rewarded through Evan Ferguson’s neat finish before Palhinha’s superb strike secured a point for the Londoners. The result extended Brighton’s winless run to three as they rued missed chances in front of goal. Roberto De Zerbi’s side showed little signs of fatigue following Thursday’s 2-0 Europa League win over Ajax and nearly took an early lead. Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno kept out Carlos Baleba’s shot from range in the seventh minute and saved Simon Adingra’s effort inside the six-yard box moments later to keep it 0-0. Baleba was pulling the strings for Brighton as his vision and inch-perfect passes picked out the pacey Adingra, who enjoyed runs into space. The hosts got the goal they deserved after 26 minutes. Igor Julio drove the Seagulls up the pitch and when Ferguson retrieved the ball outside the box he showed excellent composure to slide the ball past Leno with his left foot into the bottom corner. The goal highlighted a gulf in quality between the two sides and the lethargic Cottagers were fortunate not to concede again immediately after the kick-off when their defence was caught napping by Adingra. A rain-soaked Marco Silva cut a frustrated figure and his pleas to his Fulham players were left unanswered as Willian’s wasteful free-kick put an end to the first spell of meaningful possession the visitors had enjoyed in the Brighton half since the opening minutes. Left-back Antonee Robinson was struggling to cope with Adingra and the American then gifted Ferguson a back pass, but the Seagulls’ goalscorer failed to double his tally when he was denied by Leno after 40 minutes. Brighton started the second half quickly and Lewis Dunk was unfortunate not to score in the 49th minute. The skipper lined up a set-piece and his side-footed effort dipped onto Leno’s crossbar. Fulham made Brighton pay for their missed chances as they made it 1-1 in the 65th minute through Palhinha. The visitors threw men forward in numbers and the Portugal international got the ball out of his feet on the edge of the box and blasted an effort past Jason Steele. The goal swung the momentum in the Londoners’ favour and substitute Rodrigo Muniz nearly punished Brighton from the restart through an audacious back heel that was kept out by Steele. Both teams had opportunities to win it with Robinson clearing an effort off the line before Harry Wilson came close to grabbing a winner at the other end. Alexis Mac Allister edges closer to Liverpool transfer as agent arrives in UK
Liverpool are closing in on Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. The 24-year-old’s father, Carlos, who acts as his representative, arrived at the weekend for talks regarding the World Cup winner’s future. It is understood the Argentina international has a release clause, believed to be between £45million and £55m, in a contract he only signed in October and Liverpool are close to triggering that. Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi admitted last month he is already resigned to losing a player who was key in securing their first European participation with a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League, just five points behind Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp is looking to rebuild a midfield which misfired this season and Mac Allister has been a long-term target, with James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain departing at the end of their contracts. Liverpool were also interested in Mason Mount, entering the final 12 months of his contract at Chelsea, but Manchester United appear to be the front-runners and Klopp does not want to get into a protracted – and often expensive – process so has moved on to other players. The Reds have been linked with Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch, Nice’s Khephren Thuram and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Manu Kone and will be looking to get their business done early in time for the start of pre-season on July 8.
