Brentford have signed Netherlands goalkeeper Mark Flekken on a four-year contract. The deal, which brings the four-times capped Flekken from Bundesliga side Freiburg, is subject to international clearance and work permit. “We’re very happy to have signed Mark,” head coach Thomas Frank told the official Brentford website. “He’s a player with a lot of quality who will strengthen our goalkeeper group. “He has big experience and joins us after two great seasons with Freiburg, who have just had a top season in the Bundesliga, finishing fifth and qualifying for the Europa League. “He was a big part of the team there and now he’s coming to us and will hopefully make the group better and the team better. “He’s a very good shot-stopper and comfortable with the ball at his feet. His distribution is very impressive.” Flekken began his career in his native Netherlands at RKVV WDZ and Roda before moving to Germany, where he has played for Alemannia Aachen, Greuther Furth, Duisburg and Freiburg. The 29-year-old made his Netherlands debut in March 2022 and kept 13 clean sheets in 34 Bundesliga matches – the highest tally in the division last season. England wrapped up qualification for Euro 2024 with two matches to spare as Harry Kane’s brace helped Gareth Southgate’s side secure a 3-1 comeback win against Italy. Having kicked off Group C with an impressive victory in Naples, it has long been a case of when rather than if the unbeaten Euro 2020 runners-up would seal their spot in Germany. England looked most likely to score the next goal as Foden and Rashford continued to threaten, with Kane eventually striking the killer blow. Goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan is certain her grandparents would be beaming with pride had they had lived long enough to see her play in the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup debut. The Girls in Green kick off their campaign against tournament co-hosts Australia at 1100 BST in front of a sold-out crowd at Stadium Australia after demand forced organisers to relocate the meeting to the competition’s largest venue. The Everton keeper is eligible for the Republic through her paternal grandparents Margaret and Brendan, who were born in Roscommon and Kerry but later emigrated to the United States, where Brosnan was born and raised. Asked how she balances her dual identities as a New Jersey native pulling on a Republic shirt, Brosnan said: “I think it’s amazing. Liverpool have bought back their former Melwood training ground for their women’s team to use. The men’s first team vacated the site in West Derby in the city in November 2020 for a new build at their existing academy base in Kirkby. Amid local protests, proposals were in place for the land to be turned into a modern, multi-generational housing complex by affordable housing group Torus but after the Robbie Fowler-Jamie Carragher academy moved in plans started to change, which has ultimately resulted in the club re-purchasing their former home. As part of the move, the crest of the LFC Women’s team, which has previously trained at Tranmere’s base on the Wirral, will move to the official club crest to closer align the two operations. “This is a truly historic moment for Liverpool Football Club and the continued desire of the LFC Women’s board to elevate and develop our women’s first team and category one professional game academy,” said Liverpool’s managing director Andy Hughes. “We also have an opportunity to further develop the use of the site to support the local community by using it as an additional base for LFC Foundation. “We are delighted that FEFA (Fowler Education and Football Academy) will continue to use the site for its college that provides sport and educational opportunities for young people. “We have always taken the views of the local community seriously and we look forward to re-engaging with them in the near future.” Torus will use the funds from the sale of Melwood to build much-needed homes across Merseyside. Developments also continue apace at Anfield where the 282-tonne roof of the old Anfield Road stand has been removed to make way for the completion of the new stand which is due to open for the start of next season and expand the ground’s capacity to 61,000.
