Lawrence Shankland earns Scotland call ahead of June double-header
Lawrence Shankland earns Scotland call ahead of June double-header
Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland and his Hibernian counterpart Kevin Nisbet have both been included in the Scotland squad for the next month’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Norway and Georgia. The Edinburgh-based pair take the places of Stoke’s Jacob Brown, who missed the end of the Championship season with a hamstring issue, and Southampton forward Che Adams, who recently suffered a recurrence of the ankle injury he sustained in Scotland’s win over Cyprus. Shankland, who previously made four appearances in 2019 and 2020, was called back into the fold for the Spain game in March and he has kept his place at the end of a season in which he has scored 28 goals for Hearts. Nisbet, who won all of his 10 caps in 2021, is recalled for the first time since damaging his anterior cruciate ligament in February 2022. The 26-year-old has scored 12 goals for Hibs since returning to action in December. Rangers defender John Souttar is recalled after missing much of the season through injury. The 26-year-old, who has not played for the national team since last summer’s Nations League defeat in Ireland, takes the place of Norwich City centre-back Grant Hanley, who has been sidelined with an Achilles problem since early April. Blackburn centre-back Dom Hyam has retained his place after earning a late call-up for the last camp in March, while Steve Clarke has opted for consistency in the goalkeeping department with Angus Gunn, Zander Clark and Liam Kelly again called up in the absence of Craig Gordon, who remains sidelined as he tries to fight back from a double leg-break sustained on Christmas Eve. Scotland, who are top of Group A with two wins from their two games so far, face Norway in Oslo on Saturday, June 17 before welcoming Georgia to Hampden three days later. Anthony Joshua sees Otto Wallin as stepping stone on way to title fight
Anthony Joshua sees Otto Wallin as stepping stone on way to title fight
Anthony Joshua has vowed to deliver a “demolition job” on Otto Wallin when the British heavyweight fights on the same bill as Deontay Wilder in Saudi Arabia on December 23. Joshua, who is looking to insert himself back into the world title picture, will face the Swede as part of a stacked card in Riyadh. The 34-year-old Joshua, who beat Robert Helenius in his last bout in August, will fight after Wilder, who faces Joseph Parker on the undercard. The 2012 Olympic gold medallist is on a quest to become a three-time heavyweight champion and he sees Wallin, who claimed a points victory over Murat Gassiev in September, as the next step. “I’m looking forward to delivering my message to Otto Wallin on December 23,” Joshua told a press conference. “I can’t predict the future but I know what I want to do. I believe I’m going to be three-time heavyweight champion and the first step is to put a demolition job on Otto Wallin. “It’s going to be a really good time to go to Saudi. It’s going to be big, we haven’t seen a card like this before. “This is not a one-stop shop. This is a vision, this is my first stop and I will deliver the message. I’m determined to win and get back to my peak.” Joshua lost his WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight belts to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021 and he fell short in their rematch the following year. Eddie Hearn, his promoter, believes the best is still to come for Joshua, who will step into the ring for a third time this year after victories against Jermaine Franklin and Helenius. Hearn said: “This is a tough fight. We saw (Wallin) against Tyson Fury, he’s a good southpaw and we have seen something different from AJ (Joshua). I’m going to be three-time heavyweight champion and the first step is to put a demolition job on Otto Wallin. Anthony Joshua “I think the best chapter is still to write for AJ. He changed the face of Saudi boxing and this is a challenge he wants to take. “He wants to be heavyweight champion again and I think this will be a destructive performance from him.” Hearn talked up a potential showdown between Joshua and Wilder next year, saying: “Wilder is potentially a massive fight to bring in 2024. “This lines everything up for AJ and this lines up his whole career. I can’t wait to see him shine on December 23.” The date was initially reserved for Tyson Fury and Usyk’s undisputed heavyweight showdown, which has since been postponed following the Briton’s lacklustre performance against Francis Ngannou last month. Wallin, whose only defeat came against Fury, admitted the fight against Joshua was a bit of a surprise. He said: “It’s an easy fight to make for us. I didn’t expect to fight again this year. I’m in a great position and feel on top of the world. “I have been waiting for this for a long time and I’m blessed to be in this position.” British heavyweight Daniel Dubois will take on American Jarrell Miller on a stacked undercard, which also features Manchester’s Lyndon Arthur challenging WBA light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol and London’s Ellis Zorro taking on IBF cruiserweight holder Jai Opetaia. F1 commentator sacked from BBC role after ‘inappropriate touching’
F1 commentator sacked from BBC role after ‘inappropriate touching’
F1 commentator Jack Nicholls has lost his job at BBC Radio 5 Live after complaints of “inappropriate touching” which led to his dismissal from his lead commentator role with Formula E. An investigation was launched by Formula E after a formal complaint of inappropriate behaviour in March and allegations of “inappropriate touching” were made by three individuals, one of whom had been in a relationship with the commentator. Now Nicholls, who combined his role with Formula E alongside commentating on F1 races for 5 Live, has also lost his job with IMG, who provide radio F1 coverage for the BBC. An IMG spokesperson confirmed to The Independent on Friday: “IMG has decided to part ways with Jack Nicholls in light of the incidents that led to his departure from Formula E.” After losing his job at Formula E at the end of May, Nicholls said: “Although disappointed with the decision, I respect it and accept why it was taken. “I want to take full responsibility for what I did and apologise unreservedly for a couple of isolated incidents that has made those concerned feel uncomfortable. “I never meant any harm and I am committed to making amends and to be more mindful of my behaviour in future.” Nicholls’ voice is synonymous with Formula E with his “and we go green…” intro to races well-known to fans since the championship began in 2014. But since the investigation, Nicholls had commentated on FE races remotely from a base in London, with Ben Edwards replacing him for the double-header in Jakarta two weeks ago and for the remaining five races of this season. Nicholls combined this role with F1 commentary for the BBC, a job he has performed since 2016, but he stepped aside from scheduled appearances at the Monaco Grand Prix three weeks ago after the Formula E investigation had concluded. The commentator has also appeared on Netflix’s popular behind-the-scenes F1 show Drive to Survive. Rosanna Tennant, Harry Benjamin and Oliver Askew will be the team on hand providing BBC’s radio coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend. Harry Kane set for Bayern Munich move after making Tottenham decision
Harry Kane set for Bayern Munich move after making Tottenham decision
Tottenham have given Harry Kane approval to travel to Germany for a medical after Bayern Munich's £100m-plus deal was accepted by the London club. While the 30-year-old had been considering staying at Spurs and waiting to go on a free next summer, it is understood he now feels that the move would be the best for his career. There has also been the fact that all contact with Bayern has been smooth, and the club have made it clear they believe they can win the Champions League with a team spearheaded by Kane under Thomas Tuchel. A series of sources believe that the player's camp had been waiting for a move from Manchester United or Real Madrid but, with that not transpiring, they quickly weighed up the pros and cons and have decided to press on with the agreement with Bayern. Kane now hopes to play in the German Super Cup against Leipzig on Saturday, but there is still a lot of procedure to go through before the deal can be completed.
