WHEAT RIDGE, COLORADO: After the merger announcement of the PGA Tour and its rival LIV Golf, Paige Spiranac hit out at PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan. Spiranac is one of the world's most well-known golf personalities, with over 3.7 million Instagram followers and over 881K Twitter followers. And she has been fairly active in following the LIV Golf vs PGA Tour argument on social media.
The PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf announced their merger on Tuesday, June 6, which meant that they would dismiss any antitrust cases against each other and act as a single body in the future.
'You can wear shorts now'
In a series of tweets on Tuesday, the golf influencer expressed her thoughts on the merger of the two tours, as well as after the latest announcement, she didn't hold back in taking a shot at Monahan. She wrote on Twitter, "Jay Monahan in the players meeting-'I have big news….you can wear shorts now!'" And this sparked reactions from her followers.
A user reacting to Spiranac's post wrote, "Why would you mock the shorts? If anything shorts should become the new norm in pro golf. Tennis players don’t even wear pants when it’s cold." While one said, "You may wear shorts. The rest of the golfers can ignore this announcement."
'Worst day ever with the news'
Spiranac also targeted Golf Channel commentator Brandel Chamblee, who has been vocal in his opposition to the Saudi-backed tour. Chamblee was engaged in a verbal spat with LIV Golf's Phil Mickelson. She wrote in a Tweet, "Phil knowing Brandel is about to have the worst day ever with the news of the tour merging with LIV."
A user praised Spiranac and reacted saying, "Killed it Paige!!!! “Welcome back phil! No hard feelings?” While one just wrote, "Go away, Phil."
