Victor Wembanyama's planned phone calls after draft will hype up Spurs fans

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich revealed that No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama plans to speak with and learn from two team legends.

The San Antonio Spurs got their guy. They were one of three teams with the best odds to land the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft Lottery, and they emerged victorious on May 16. With that, Victor Wembanyama, a phenom prospect from France, would undoubtedly be a Spur for the start of his NBA career. It became official on Thursday night, as Wembanyama was announced as the No. 1 pick to the Spurs, and received his jersey and hat.

Spurs fans have been hyped since the team won the lottery over a month ago. Now, they have even more reason to be pumped.

While speaking with the media on Thursday night, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich revealed that Wembanyama has expressed interest in speaking with and learning from two team legends — David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Of course, Robinson and Duncan were the Spurs' other two No. 1 picks.

Spurs: Victor Wembanyama plans to learn from David Robinson and Tim Duncan

Robinson and Duncan are two players who lived up to their No. 1 overall selections in 1987 and 1997, respectively. Both spent their entire careers with the Spurs, brought the team their first five NBA championships, and became future Hall of Famers. That's quite the duo Wembanyama can learn from.

Duncan set franchise records with 1,392 games played, 47,368 minutes played, 26,496 points, 15,091 total rebounds, and 3,020 blocks in his 19-year career.

Robinson, meanwhile, recorded 20,790 points, 10,497 total rebounds, and 2,954 blocks in 34,271 minutes played and 987 games played.

NBA correspondent Marc Stein reported just days after the Spurs won the NBA Draft lottery that the expectation is Duncan will visit their practice facility regularly to work with Wembanyama when the team is at home.

Wembanyama has long been viewed as the top prospect in the 2023 class and a potential franchise changer. It was only fitting that an elite big man once again landed on the Spurs. To make sure he lives up to the hype, he plans on reaching out and learning from two franchise greats in Robinson and Duncan.
