The USMNT crashed out of the Gold Cup at the semi-final stage in a defeat to Panama on penalties. It is safe to say by the reaction on Twitter that fans are not happy with the Stars and Stripes' performance.

Overall it has been a poor tournament for B.J. Callaghan's side. There were emphatic 6-0 wins over Saint Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago. However, they also drew with Jamaica and needed penalties to get past Canada. Their shootout luck ran out in San Diego as Panama prevailed.

The USA started brightly with Cade Cowell hitting the post in the first minute. Although, Panama began to look dangerous and thought they had taken the lead in the 28th minute. Adalberto Carrasquilla finished past Matt Turner but it was ruled out for offside.

Staying onside would be a problem for Panama again in added time at the end of the second half. They believed they had snatched a late winner through Ismael Diaz but again the linesman came to the rescue for the USMNT.

Panama finally scored a goal that counted in extra time when Ivan Anderson flicked the ball past Turner before tapping into an empty net. Jesus Ferreira responded by volleying in the equaliser to send the game to penalties.

Ferreira was the hero in extra time but missed from the spot. In the decisive kick, Cristian Roldan's effort was saved by Orlando Mosquera. The USMNT were eliminated.
