The energy around the team is a bit muddled right now, with training camp shenanigans getting in the way of optimism.
Dallas has been in the news cycle for the wrong reasons this week after star CB Trevon Diggs chirped at QB Dak Prescott in a now-viral clip from Cowboys practice. Prescott was unable to find his receivers downfield, which led him to run out of bounds. Diggs had some — let's call them strong — words for his teammate.

Shady gets shaded. The Cowboys-Eagles rivalry transcends this petty internet drama but is also the root of this petty internet drama. Also, young players don't always appreciate the sage wisdom of past generations. It's a stretch to call McCoy an old-head — the man played NFL football three years ago — but he comes from a different era and may have a different take on modern football practice decorum.
Ultimately, this drama feels like a massive pile of nothing. The Cowboys have moved on to the best of their ability, with Diggs repeatedly referring to Dak as the leader of his team. The Cowboys are even spinning it as a positive example of the competitive culture in the locker room. That's a bit ridiculous, but hey. More power to them.
Football is by nature a combative sport. Defense intentionally rams into offense as hard as possible. The goal in defensive drills is to shut the offense down. The goal in offensive drills is to poke holes in the defense. Tension is only natural. It happens in every training camp, with every team. Travis Kelce punched a teammate in Kansas City last week. That won't stop everyone from picking the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl again.
Diggs is one of the best defensive backs in football, and the Cowboys rewarded him accordingly with a massive extension. He and Prescott are the two pillars of Dallas' franchise — the most expensive pieces for a presumed title contender, both locked up for the foreseeable future. One has to imagine they'll be able to figure it out over a drink later, if they haven't already. The Cowboys have bigger ambitions in mind and it's hard to stay too upset at your coworker when you're due almost $100 million over the next five years.
