Trent Alexander-Arnold: Injury progress & potential return date for Liverpool defender

For 71 minutes on Sunday afternoon, the Anfield faithful were treated to nothing short of an exhibition from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

After enduring a difficult outing at St. James' Park last weekend which perhaps could've resulted in an incredibly early dismissal, the Reds' captain for the day in Virgil van Dijk's absence was at his majestic best against Aston Villa.

His passing showcase criminally concluded with just a single assist, as his distribution terrorised the Villa defence all afternoon in Liverpool's impressive triumph.

However, his showing ended on a sombre note as he pulled up 20 minutes from time and was subsequently forced off. Whether or not he spends time on the sidelines as a result of the knock remains to be seen, but here's what we know about Trent's injury so far.

When will Trent Alexander-Arnold return from injury?

A suspected hamstring issue is believed to have disrupted his showcase on Sunday, with Alexander-Arnold being replaced by young Jarell Quansah after 71 minutes on Sunday.

Speaking post-match, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp confirmed that the England international will have a scan to determine the full extent of the problem: "I don’t know exactly [on the nature of his injury]. I asked him, he said it's [his] hamstring. Not too serious is his opinion, but we obviously have to wait for the scans and then we will know more."

Alexander-Arnold, who has been listed as a midfielder again for England's upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine and friendly against Scotland, but his injury setback could rule him out of contention. A potential hamstring injury could sideline him for weeks, even if Alexander-Arnold himself doesn't believe the issue is a serious one.

Once club football returns after the international break, Liverpool take on Wolves on Saturday 16 September in the lunchtime kick-off, before their Europa League campaign gets underway against LASK at Anfield five days later. Injured or not, Alexander-Arnold isn't expected to play a major role in the Reds' group stage campaign this season - not until the latter stages of the competition.
