How 'Higher' by Creed became a new anthem for US sports teams
How 'Higher' by Creed became a new anthem for US sports teams
The internet is impossible to predict – after all, who could have seen a track by 90s rockers Creed becoming one of the most popular songs of 2023? If you’re an avid TikTok user, the chances are you’ll have heard ‘Higher’ on your feed in some form or another this year. The 1999 track from the Florida band’s album Human Clay has found a brand new audience as more and more people discover it online. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised by its new popularity, given how good the track is. Creed - Higher (Official Video) www.youtube.com It’s right out of the 90s mold of epic rock tracks, and more American in its makeup than Uncle Sam chowing down on a corn dog at a demolition derby. It still slaps in 2023, and it’s become the soundtrack to countless posts this year – but how? Mostly, it’s due to a special connection with sports fans which goes back all the way to the late 90s and early 00s. In their pomp, Creed performed an NFL halftime show, helping to mark Thanksgiving at the home of the Dallas Cowboys in 2001. Thanxgiving Medley (Higher/My Sacrifice/Don't Stop Dancing www.youtube.com Footage of the performance has been recirculating this year, and it's perhaps no surprise given the bombastic of the track and the high-octane staging – which saw a number of aerialists fly into the stadium twirling in huge strips of material. Since then, the band seems to have had a connection with American sports fans – and now ‘Higher’ seems to have become an unofficial anthem, much like ‘Sweet Caroline’ by Neil Diamond has done for the England football team in recent times. It was clear just how much the song has been embraced by crowds when Texas Rangers fans sang the track with the help of a huge karaoke screen during a baseball game this year. Texas Rangers fans singing some CREED - 2023 ALDS www.youtube.com It’s not just fans who have made the song popular again, either. After the Texas Rangers made the tune their theme song this year, the players belted it out in the dressing room after claiming the World Series too. However, the first person to really get the song circulating again was TikTok user @maceahwindu, who brought us a brilliant version of the tune. As another sign of the song making an impact in the world of sport, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Josh Dobbs replied to a clip of @maceahwindu mixed with highlights of the Vikings’s overtime win against the Atlanta Falcons, writing: “I wish I could hit that note.” It's here to stay, so expect to hear 'Higher' more and more in the sporting world and beyond. Liam Gallagher speaks out after being accused of ‘tormenting’ young Man Utd fan
Liam Gallagher has responded after being accused of “tormenting” a young Manchester United fan during Saturday’s FA Cup Final. Gallagher’s beloved Manchester City beat United 2-1 on the day, and he seemed to be enjoying himself as the BBC cameras focused on his reactions for both City goals. After the second goal was scored, he could be seen interacting with a young fan in a United shirt. Gallagher celebrated the goal and then shook the shoulders of a fan in what seemed like a teasing manner. Instead, he clarified what most people already thought – that it was all a bit of good natured fun. He wrote on Twitter: "The young lad I was apparently antagonising was my mates kid who I was consoling. "He’s a Utd fan I love and adore him we’re not all c****s CTID LG x." It comes after Liam’s brother Noel revealed what it would take to put things behind him and “consider” getting Oasis back together. Noel and brother Liam went their separate ways in 2009 and haven’t played together since then. However, it now looks like Noel could be more open to the idea than he has been for years. Arnold Schwarzenegger has stark warning for steroid users
Arnold Schwarzenegger has stark warning for steroid users
Arnold Schwarzenegger has delivered a stark warning for anyone thinking of using steroids. The actor and former bodybuilder reflected on his history with drug use and pointed out the dangers of taking the banned substance. Speaking in an interview with Men’s Health, the 75-year-old said that he used to take both testosterone and dianabol, a popular steroid drug. “One hundred milligrams a week,” he said about his testosterone usage. “And then three dianabol a day, so that was 15 milligrams a day.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter He also clarified that taking steroids weren’t illegal until 1990, when Congress passed The Anabolic Steroid Control Act, and things were different then to how they are today. “Bodybuilding always, always was considered a safe sport. But now it’s not. Now people are dying—they’re dying because of overdoses of drugs and they don’t know what the f*** they’re doing,” Schwarzenegger said. “They’re listening to charlatans. If I want to get medical advice from a doctor, I go to UCLA or I go to the Cleveland Clinic.” Warning against using steroids, he added: “Don’t go there. Yes, we are at a time now where we always look for the easy way to make money, the fast way to get rich, the easy way to be an influencer." “Anytime you abuse the body, you’re going to regret it. So I just want young people to know that I have seen people getting kidney transplants and suffering tremendously from it.” He also said that he understands if bodybuilders don’t want to take his advice. “I recognise the fact that, who am I to say this? This is the guy who climbed without a rope,” he added. Have your say in our news democracy. Click the upvote icon at the top of the page to help raise this article through the indy100 rankings.
