Should Steelers be concerned about Kenny Pickett’s camp struggles?

Pittsburgh Steelers fans better hope Kenny Pickett becomes more efficient in the red zone.

Kenny Pickett is a promising quarterback, but the Pittsburgh Steelers will need him to execute at a higher level in the red zone to help get this middle-of-the-pack AFC team over the top here soon.

Mark Kaboly of The Athletic paid close attention to what Pickett was, and wasn't, doing during Sunday's training camp practice in Latrobe. His big takeaway was that he was not even remotely close to efficient in the red zone. Although Kaboly has a reputation of being a Yinzer Eeyore, it is hard to win games when a quarterback only thrives between the 20s, like an Andy Dalton of sorts.

Is this something Pickett will be able to overcome, or will it be a limitation during his NFL career?

Kenny Pickett's red zone struggles in Pittsburgh Steelers camp are concerning

While there is a lot to like about Pickett's leadership and overall game, you have to remember that the throwing windows get tighter as the field of play shrinks, especially going from college to pro. Pickett's accuracy has never been a concern; it has always been good enough. However, there have been doubts cast about his tiny hands during the draft process, and his overall arm strength.

The former will be fine, as he did play his college games at Heinz Field/Acrisure Stadium. But when it comes to the latter, Pickett will need to rifle the pigskin into some tight windows in critical spots on the field for Pittsburgh. It is all about putting six points on the board instead of three. The best quarterbacks in the league make big-time plays in critical situations in the game. Will he do that?

Overall, I do believe these red-zone issues can be rectified through familiarity, repetition and awareness. However, I have reservations about Pickett being able to really spin it more than he already does. He may get stronger as he matures, but he is already in his mid-20s. How much stronger will he get? Frankly, he will need to lean on his intangibles to maximize his NFL talents.

Pickett can improve in the red zone, but this could be a major issue for him throughout his career.
