It's certainly not the strongest field on the schedule, but this week's PGA Tour event, the Rocket Mortgage Classic, promises to be an exciting one.
The event has only been in existence for four years, so we have limited data based on what to make our predictions on. Regardless, I'm going to do my best to predict the winning score along with the final score for the top 10 golfers on the odds list.
Let's dive into it.
Rocket Mortgage Classic score predictions
Winning score: -24
The Rocket Mortgage Classic is one of the biggest birdie fests on the PGA Tour's schedule. The winning scores of the four times this event has taken place are: -25, -23, -18, -26.
So, if we discard the outlier 2021 winning score, the winner of the tournament has hit at least -23. Tony Finau ran away with it by five strokes last season, so 26-under is probably an outlier on the other end of the spectrum.
I think 24-under is a safe guess this week.
Tony Finau score prediction: -16
Tony Finau is the defending champion, so his course history already gives him an advantage on the field. But, the issue is his current form.
Since winning the Mexico Open, he's gone T23, T72, missed cut, T32, T45. Unless he can flick the switch in a hurry, he may not be there at the end on Sunday.
Rickie Fowler score prediction: -21
Rickie Fowler may not have a win this season, but he's been the definition of consistent. He has finished inside the top 20 in nine of his last 11 starts. So, I expect a similar finish from him this week.
It'll be another case of "close but no cigar".
Collin Morikawa score prediction: -15
Collin Morikawa has the talent and ability to go low this weekend, but he's another golfer, like Finau, whose form has been all out of shape. He has finished inside the top 20 just once dating back to the Masters.
Justin Thomas score prediction: -24
In my betting preview for the event, which you can read here, you'll find that I predicted JT to win this week's event. He has been out of form for the majority of the season, but his iron game at last week's Travelers Championship was as dialed in as it has been in almost a year and a half.
Now is the time to buy low on Justin Thomas.
Hideki Matsuyama score prediction: -19
Hideki Matsuyama has been Rickie Fowler-lite in a sense over the past few months. He hasn't been in serious contention, but he has finished his worst finish dating back to The Players Championship is T32.
I expect him to perform even better this week, but still fall short of the win.
Max Homa score prediction: -12
Max Homa is all out of sorts this week, missing the cut in two straight events including the U.S. Open in his home city of Los Angeles.
I don't know if it's a physical or psychological issue, but I'm staying far away from him this week. With that being said, the field is weak enough I have no doubt he'll at least make the cut.
Sungjae Im score prediction: -17
Sungjae Im, much like Justin Thomas, has started to find his form again. last week, he gained strokes on the field in all four areas. he should be able to take advantage of a weak field this week.
Tom Kim score prediction: -22
Tom Kim's style of play fits this course to perfect. Driving accuracy and approach shots shorter than 150 yards is the name of the game at the Detroit Golf Club, and that's exactly where he thrives.
I have him finishing in the top 5 this week.
Keegan Bradley score prediction: -19
Keegan Bradley is going to be coming into this event red hot after winning last week's Travelers Championship. His game is certainly dialed in, but I think the emotional exhaustion that comes with winning a tournament could hurt him down the stretch this weekend.
Cam Davis score prediction: -10
Cam Davis won this event in 2021, so his course history is top tier. With that being said, he has missed the cut in three of his last four starts. His game isn't where he wants it to be as he tries to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic for the second time.
