Wayne Rooney and Phil Neville were teammates at Manchester United but are now coaching across the pond in Major League Soccer.
Rooney's coaching career started at Derby County in EFL League One, where first joined as a player-manager before becoming a full-on coach. In July 2022, Rooney left his post at Derby to become the head coach of D.C. United.
Neville has a little more experience than Rooney, as he was an assistant at Manchester United and Valencia before becoming head coach of the England women's national team from 2018-2021. In January 2021, Neville became the head coach of Inter Miami.
1. D.C. United 2-3 Inter Miami (9/18/2022)
The first game of the Rooney-Neville series was entertaining and full of goals.
Former Crystal Palace forward Christian Benteke, who Rooney knows quite well, opened the scoring for D.C. The goal was Benteke's first for the club since joining in August 2022.
But two from Miami's Leonardo Campana saw the game turn on its head with the Herons leading 2-1 just after the second-half kicked off. Not long after that, Taxiarchis Fountas pulled one back for the Black-and-Red.
Surprisingly, no goals were scored in the next 30 minutes before the legendary Gonzalo Higuain sealed the three points for Miami with a 94th minute winner. D.C. United left the game ruing their missed chances against Neville's men.
