Open Championship payout distribution 2023: Prize money, purse for Royal Liverpool

Breaking down The Open Championship payout distribution at Royal Liverpool in 2023 from the purse with prize money for the winner and every finishing position.

Given that the last two winners of The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club were Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, golf fans were ecstatic to see The Open head back to Hoylake this year for the final major championship on the 2023 calendar.

After Tommy Fleetwood, amateur Christo Lamprecht and Emiliano Grillo ran out to tie for the lead in the first round, Brian Harman went wild on Friday in the second round with a 6-under round of 65 while other players were struggling to break par, putting himself well in front of the field at The Open Championship at -10.

Obviously, Harman and other contenders are vying for a place in golf history and on the transciption plate of the Claret Jug. But they are also trying to get their share of the British Open payout with major prize money on the line. The R&A, who runs The Open, has increased the purse $2.5 million from 2022, putting it at a $16.5 million total purse.

Here's how that breaks down with the Open Championship payout distribution, starting with the winner's share.

Open Championship payout distribution 2023: Winner prize money

The winner of the 2023 Open Championship will receiver a record-breaking $3 million. That number is up a full $500,000 from the prize money that Cameron Smith received a year ago when he won at St. Andrews to be named Champion Golfer of the Year. The R&A has followed suit with the PGA Tour and other majors in meaningfully increasing their purses and it's highly reflected in the winner's prize money. Put simply, winning The Open is quite a profitable endeavor.

Note: The payouts at The Open will be updated after the second round when the number of players to make the cut has been revealed.

Players who fail to make the cut will receive roughly $10,000, give or take depending on performance.

Though The Open being a major championship has always meant that we're looking at a substantial payout across the board, it's impressive that just making the cut at Royal Liverpool means that players will be receiving more than $35,000 for the week of work at Hoylake.

Harman, Fleetwood and a group of chasers with plenty of big names among them like Spieth, McIlroy, Koepka, Homa and more has made for great drama. Even better, though, has been the course itself, which only needed a round to prove that it's one of the best major championship golf courses in the world, and one we already can't wait for the Open Championship to return to.
