Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd: Player ratings as Magpies edge Saturday night thriller

Newcastle United moved into fifth place in the Premier League table with a 1-0 victory at home to Manchester United on Saturday night.

The Red Devils missed the chance to move up to fifth themselves and have now been overtaken by the Magpies in the standings.

Erik ten Hag's side were second-best on the night and fell to a deserved defeat to bring their recent run of fine domestic form to an end.

How the game unfolded

Newcastle dominated the opening exchanges but were nearly handed an opener when a mix-up between Diogo Dalot and Andre Onana saw the defender clear a loose ball up against his arm and towards his own net, retreating in time to clear.

Down the other end, a pin-point pass from Bruno Fernandes picked out the run of Alejandro Garnacho, who brought a low save out of Nick Pope from a tight angle.

Onana was forced into his first save of the evening when Kieran Trippier's ball between three Man Utd defenders found Joelinton, with Miguel Almiron seeing his effort palmed aside.

The hosts continued to pile on the pressure early on. A failed clearance from Aaron Wan-Bissaka fell straight to Alexander Isak, and his shot was blocked behind by Harry Maguire.

Just before the break, Trippier rattled a free-kick off the underside of Onana's crossbar as Newcastle continued to probe for an opener.

Shortly after the interval, Newcastle were rewarded with the opening goal. Trippier's low cross to the back-post found the run of Anthony Gordon, who had evaded Wan-Bissaka and was able to convert a simple tap-in.

Newcastle nearly found a second when Lewis Miley's shot from a cut-back was blocked off the line by Wan-Bissaka, who was cleared of handball after a brief VAR check.

Man Utd weren't completely out of the contest and came close to finding an unlikely leveller when substitute Sergio Reguilon lashed a volley at goal, only to be denied by a fine acrobatic block by Fabian Schar.

With a minute of normal time remaining, Man Utd thought they had equalised. Antony's volley ricocheted into the back of the net via a deflection off Maguire, who was standing in an offside position and so the goal was chalked off.

After nine minutes of added time, Newcastle's victory was confirmed and Man Utd were consigned to their sixth defeat in 14 Premier League games.

Newcastle United player ratings (4-3-3)

GK: Nick Pope - 6/10 - A spectator for the most part, though did come up with some important saves early on. Substituted with a shoulder injury in the latter stages.

RB: Kieran Trippier - 9/10 - Absolutely outstanding. Carved Man Utd open with his excellent range of passing all night long, coming up with an assist for Gordon.

CB: Jamaal Lascelles - 7/10 - Solid and steady, muscling Man Utd's forwards out of the game.

CB: Fabian Schar - 8/10 - The more elegant of Newcastle's centre-backs, easily side-stepping away from Martial to start attacks. Produced a huge block late in the day.

LB: Tino Livramento - 8/10 - Dan Burn is going to have a problem on his hands wrestling back his spot if Livramento keeps performing like this, locking down Rashford at one end and creating problems for Man Utd down the other.

CM: Bruno Guimaraes - 7/10 - Diligently and dutifully broke up play in a calmer performance than in some of Newcastle's other big games this season.

CM: Lewis Miley - 7/10 - Never scared to take on a man, never scared to ask for possession. 17 years of age.

CM: Joelinton - 7/10 - Bustled his way about midfield just bulldozing his way past and through his Man Utd counterparts.

RW: Miguel Almiron - 6/10 - Always buzzing and up for the challenge, but was desperately missing his shooting boots.

CF: Alexander Isak - 6/10 - His best work came when he dropped deep to drag the cumbersome Maguire out of position. A joy to watch with feet like his, mind.

LW: Anthony Gordon - 8/10 - Limped a little at times but came alive when his team needed him, grabbing the winner.

Substitutes

SUB: Martin Dubravka (86' for Pope) - N/A

SUB: Matt Ritchie (90' for Gordon) - N/A

Subs not used: Loris Karius (GK), Paul Dummett, Emil Krafth, Lewis Hall, Alex Murphy, Amadou Diallo, Ben Parkinson

Manager

Eddie Howe - 7/10 - Newcastle were spirited and menacing throughout despite their injury woes.

Manchester United player ratings (4-2-3-1)

GK: Andre Onana - 5/10 - A little safer tonight with his shot-stopping but consistently found the stands with his kicks.

RB: Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 4/10 - Failed to track Gordon properly throughout, eventually leading to the opening goal.

CB: Harry Maguire - 7/10 - Held his ground to clear crosses and high balls into the box. Could have done with a bit more support from his teammates.

CB: Luke Shaw - 7/10 - Similarly dogged in the heart of defence, but was never likely to keep a clean sheet with the amount of work he and Maguire had to get through.

LB: Diogo Dalot - 5/10 - Provided little support at either end of the pitch. Perhaps a little fortunate not to have given away an early penalty for handball.

CM: Scott McTominay - 4/10 - It's an overused comment to say players hide when the going gets tough, but it's an accurate one to describe McTominay's performance here. Had no intention of getting on the ball.

CM: Kobbie Mainoo - 6/10 - Didn't look like a complete liability and was more composed than his senior teammates. Couldn't carry the load all by himself, though.

RM: Marcus Rashford - 3/10 - A lazy and languid performance. Showed little desire to compete and fight for his team. Hauled off after an hour.

AM: Bruno Fernandes - 5/10 - Started brightly with some probing passes forward but his influence waned as the game went on.

LM: Alejandro Garnacho - 5/10 - Again someone who looked lively early on but failed to stay afloat.

CF: Anthony Martial - 3/10 - Offered absolutely nothing. Allowed Newcastle defenders to run past him far too easily, forcing Ten Hag to come and berate him in the first half. Hooked on the hour mark as well.

Substitutes

SUB: Rasmus Hojlund (61' for Martial) - 5/10

SUB: Antony (61' for Rashford) - 6/10

SUB: Sergio Reguilon (80' for Wan-Bissaka) - 6/10

SUB: Sofyan Amrabat (80' for Mainoo) - 5/10

Subs not used: Altay Bayindir (GK), Victor Lindelof, Raphael Varane, Donny van de Beek, Facundo Pellistri

Manager

Erik ten Hag - 4/10 - Man Utd lack intensity and rhythm. They were outfought on every level.
