Monty Williams is getting a mega contract to coach the Pistons for the foreseeable future. He's exactly the kind of coach this rebuilding team needs.
According to Shams Charania, the Detroit Pistons have hired Monty Williams with a very lucrative contract to coach their team. His deal is reportedly for $72 million over six years with incentives that could push it as high as $100 million total. Marvin Bagley and Bojan Bogdanovic are the only two players on the roster with a higher annual salary.
This deal makes a lot of sense for the Pistons. Yes, it is a huge price tag for a coach who has never won a championship. Still, they are able to get a coach who has veteran experience and one who would have not chosen them otherwise.
Having a coach who makes more than most of the players will certainly command respect in the locker room immediately. The fact that they have shown a lot of investment in him shows the front office has his back (obviously). For a young team, this is the best move they could make.
What can Monty Williams do for the Pistons?
Williams has been a head coach twice in this league — for the Pelicans and most recently with the Suns. While he has struggled with rotations in the last couple of months, he is still a very good coach who can lead a team.
For Williams, this coaching job makes all the sense in the world. The veteran coach has secured a mega bag for the future. Additionally, he has the long-term security that is needed when coaching a team that is miles away from contending for a title.
This shows to the fanbase that the Pistons care about their fans. Spending big for an NBA coach shows that they are putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to caring about the fans. Unlike players, there is no spending limit to how much you can pay an NBA coach.
