The Washington Nationals have released Corey Dickerson, a former All-Star, who immediately becomes one of the top names on the waiver market. Could the Braves come calling?
If the Atlanta Braves opt against solving their left field conundrum internally, there may be an external option staring them in the face.
The Washington Nationals have released Corey Dickerson, making him available to any interested suitor. Dickerson hasn't been the player Washington had hoped when they acquired him, but he can still provide a valuable service on a part-time basis, which is exactly what Alex Anthopoulos and Brian Snitker would ask him to do in Atlanta. In return, Dickerson gets a chance to compete for a World Series. What's not to love?
MLB Trade Rumors explained why Washington chose now to release Dickerson:
"Dickerson has hit just .252/.285/.357 for the year, producing a wRC+ of 71 that would be a career low for him. Now that the deadline has passed, the club will use his roster spot to give a chance to other players with a greater chance to help in future seasons."
Will the Braves sign Corey Dickerson?
Atlanta would be wise to look into Dickerson. For now, the Braves have a rotation of Eddie Rosario, Marcell Ozuna and Kevin Pillar playing the position. All hold similar value to Dickerson, but haven't performed up to par so far this season, sans Ozuna. Ozuna plays primarily DH these days, though, while Dickerson offers some stable defense.
Left field was an area of need for the Braves at the trade deadline. Rather than spend assets to upgrade at the position, Anthopoulos instead decided to stand pat, likely with the realization in mind that a player like Dickerson would come available if Atlanta's need was really so dire.
Now, AA has a chance to act on that.
