The Colorado Rapids have removed Brazilian midfielder Max Alves from all team activities due to reports that he was involved in “unlawful sports gambling.”

"We are aware of the reports regarding a Colorado Rapids player in connection with unlawful sports gambling. We take matters of this nature seriously and seek at all times to protect the integrity of the game. The player has been removed from all team activities while MLS conducts an investigation into the matter,” said the Rapids in a statement.

According to Brazilian paper, O Globo, Alves is under investigation in Brazil as part of a match manipulation scandal. The youngster is accused of accepting around $12,000 from match-fixers last September for receiving a yellow card in a 4–1 loss to the LA Galaxy.

The foul in question took place at the 65th minute – a full minute after he subbed in – and against Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez. With both players vying for the ball, the foul seems, at first glance, like any rough challenge a defensive mid would dish against a star striker.

However, according to Brazilian authorities who seized WhatsApp messages, Alves is one of 16 people, including seven soccer players, who are named in the scheme. He is the only one playing outside of Brazil.

The former Flamengo player who signed a four-year deal with the Colorado Rapids in January 2022, and has since recorded one goal and one assist in 38 appearaces.
