Luke Shaw admits Man City treble 'hurt' Man Utd

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has admitted that seeing Manchester City win the treble last season 'hurt a lot'.

City became the first English team to complete the treble - UEFA Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup - since United famously achieved the feat back in 1999. The Red Devils had the opportunity to derail City's run to the treble in the FA Cup final back in early June, but lost the game 2-1 at Wembley Stadium thanks to an Ilkay Gundogan brace.

Speaking to BBC Sport about City's treble, defender Shaw admitted that the Citizens' equalling the 1999 Man Utd side's achievement was hard to take.

"It hurt a lot. A lot," he said. "All of us as players felt that, especially for me, seeing them come to the England camp. It was really hard to take. We can't let that happen again.

"It's our time now to start putting a stamp on things and not letting it always be so easy for them because, in the past, it's looked like that. As players, we can't accept that any more."

Shaw also took the time to discuss how Erik ten Hag has turned the fortunes of United around, with the club now tipped to challenge Man City for the Premier League title season after a period of mediocrity under the likes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

"The culture has changed. It's the attitude, the way we train, the intensity, the application that everyone brings in day in, day out," the long-serving defender explained.

"The manager demands that every single day. Even when you're at home he wants you to be at your best. He wants you to be doing the right things, living the right way, because football is our life - it's what we do day in, day out - and we need to do everything we can to get to the maximum level."
