Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that left-back Andrew Robertson will have to undergo surgery on an injured shoulder and will be out "for a while".

Robertson dislocated his shoulder during a collision with goalkeeper Unai Simon in Scotland's 2-0 defeat to Spain in Euro 2024 last Thursday.

He returned to England to be assessed by Liverpool's medical team and to make a decision on whether surgery would be required.

If the injury was allowed to heal naturally, Robertson would have been able to return within a month, though would have been more susceptible to it reoccurring, and so Klopp has confirmed the 29-year-old will go under the knife.

"Talking to pretty much all the experts it looks like surgery will be the best thing, especially in the long term, and that means he is out for a while," Klopp said in a press conference ahead of this weekend's Merseyside derby at home to Everton.

"In my experience, you can train pretty quickly again but not football-specific so because you have to be careful of challenges and all these kind of things."

Surgery on this type of shoulder injury usually rules players out for around three months, which means Robertson may not feature for Liverpool again until 2024.

In his place, Klopp is likely to lean on deputy left-back Kostas Tsimikas, who recently signed a new long-term contract at Anfield. The Greek international has played both of Liverpool's Europa League group games, also featuring in the Carabao Cup win over Leicester, but has appeared just once in the Premier League.

Robertson, meanwhile, has started all eight of Liverpool's Premier League fixtures this season to this point, notably scoring while captaining the Reds in a 3-1 comeback win at Wolves.
