Chloe Kelly says World Cup final loss will not stunt growth of women’s football
Chloe Kelly says World Cup final loss will not stunt growth of women’s football
England striker Chloe Kelly expects the women’s game to continue growing in the country despite the Lionesses’ World Cup final heartbreak. The Manchester City forward, match-winner in the Euro 2022 final, this time experienced the heartbreak of defeat as England were beaten by Spain in Sydney last month. But the 25-year-old looks on the tournament as a whole as a positive experience that is only likely to generate further interest in the sport. She feels proof of that came on Thursday as City announced a new agreement with baby gear brand Joie to become the new naming rights partner of their Academy Stadium. “It was a great summer, and a great summer for women’s football and England,” said Kelly, “It’s great to be winning the Euros and then going on to a World Cup final. It’s great for the country and great for the women’s game. “That success obviously brings deals like this to the women’s game, which is really important for the growth of the game. It is exciting and there is a lot to come still.” Kelly has already put the disappointment of the World Cup final loss behind her as she focuses on pre-season training with City. She said: “It’s good to get back in with the team, get back on the pitch, keep learning, find those relationships again and keep building on last season. “Of course I’m not on top of my game as it’s still pre-season - I don’t want to peak too early - and it is really important we build as we go. “Starting the season well is really important but I think as we go we need to get better. It’s important not starting where we need to be at the end of the season. We need to be consistent throughout.” After missing out on honours last term, and narrowly falling short of a Champions League spot, Kelly is determined for the team to make its mark. She added: “We want to be winning trophies. It is really important for us to be doing that, and Champions League football - we need to be in it and we need to be pushing for that.” Manchester City begin their Women’s Super League campaign with a trip to West Ham on October 1 but prior to the start of the WSL, Kelly will return to the international fold for Nations League games against Scotland and the Netherlands on September 22 and 26 respectively. England manager Sarina Wiegman has expressed concern at the scheduling of the matches so soon after the end of the World Cup in Australia. “It is important we recover well,” Kelly said. “We need to look after our bodies in these moments.” Read More Sarina Wiegman ‘worried’ about schedule as England prepare for Nations League Gary Neville received abuse ‘like nothing before’ in social media swap with Jill Scott ‘Get back in the kitchen’: Lioness Fara Williams on the aggressive sexist and homophobic abuse she gets online How Fifa is leading the push for football transfers’ biggest change since Bosman Maguire’s mother hits out at criticism of England and Man United defender Harry Kane signs memorabilia deal with American company Fanatics

Eubank Jr vs Smith: New date revealed for delayed rematch
Eubank Jr vs Smith: New date revealed for delayed rematch
Chris Eubank Jr and Liam Smith will square off on 1 July, as a delay to their rematch was confirmed on Tuesday. Smith stopped Eubank Jr in Round 4 in January, and it was announced in April that the Britons would clash at the AO Arena in Manchester again on 17 June. However, ESPN reported on Monday (8 May) that Smith had suffered an injury, which would likely delay the middleweight rematch by a matter of weeks. That news was confirmed by Boxxer, which will promote the rematch, on Tuesday (9 May). “It’s just an old injury niggle flaring up,” said Smith, “but I want to take the time to let it heal up so that I can enter the ring at 100 percent on fight night. A 100 percent Liam Smith beats Chris Eubank Jr every day of the week and twice on Sunday.” Smith, 34, and Eubank Jr, 33, fought each other in January after the latter’s planned bout with Conor Benn fell through. Eubank Jr and Benn were due to box one another in October, almost 29 years to the day after their fathers’ second and final clash, but it was revealed on fight week that Benn had failed two drug tests in the lead-up to the catchweight bout. Benn’s return is still up in the air; the British Boxing Board of Control has stripped the 26-year-old of his licence, while UK Anti-Doping has suspended the Briton. However, the WBC did clear Benn of ‘intentional doping’. Eubank Jr will take a professional record of 32-3 (23 knockouts) into his rematch with Smith, whose pro record stands at 33-3-1 (20 KOs). BBC accused of being 'baldist' after Pablo Zabaleta mistakenly used in Luis Rubiales report
BBC accused of being 'baldist' after Pablo Zabaleta mistakenly used in Luis Rubiales report
The BBC has been accused of “baldism” after mistakenly using footage of former Premier League footballer Pablo Zabaleta in a segment about Spanish football association (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales. Rubiales has faced repeated calls to step down from his position as the head of Spain’s football association after he grabbed Spanish striker Jenni Hermoso and kissed her mouth during the Women’s World Cup medal ceremony. The BBC ran a news bulletin yesterday about the RFEF calling an urgent meeting to discuss the scandal which included footage of the kiss – but that quickly cut to a clip of Zabaleta walking alongside a colleague. While the two bear some resemblance, the footage of the former Manchester City star was from the draw for the 2022 World Cup. The Fifa and Qatar logos are visible on the wall Zabaleta walks past in the video. “A production error meant we showed the wrong image in an earlier broadcast. This has now been rectified,” the broadcaster said in a statement. Comedian Omid Djalili posted on X, the app formerly known as Twitter, about the incident. He poked fun at the organisation, saying: “As a bald man, I am offended. Especially as they didn’t include footage of me or [fellow bald celebrity] Stanley Tucci.” One commenter asked: “Is this considered a ‘baldist’ offence?” However, another person was more sympathetic, pointing out that the two look very alike. They said: “Gotta be honest, I watched the clip 3 times thinking 'wheres Zabaleta?'. Easily done IMO.” Rubiales’ kiss has sparked outrage in Spain and beyond. Hermoso has since said the action was not consensual. She said the situation had left her feeling “vulnerable and a victim of aggression”. In her statement, she described the kiss as “an impulsive act, sexist, out of place and without any type of consent from my part. In short, I wasn’t respected.” Fifa, the sports governing body, has suspended Rubiales for 90 days starting on 26 August. The Spanish FA has stuck firmly by its boss throughout and has even threatened to sue Hermoso. Separately on 28 August, a Spanish court opened a preliminary investigation to see if what took place was a sexual assault. Spain’s labour minister and second deputy prime minister Yolanda Diaz has also weighed in, according to Reuters. She said male chauvinism is “systemic” in the country.
