Polish referee Szymon Marciniak is in charge of the 2023 Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter Milan at the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul. Marciniak was given the honour of refereeing the World Cup final in December, which passed largely without controversy. He was the first-ever Pole to referee a World Cup final and his assistants that day in Qatar, compatriots Pawel Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz, are on hand again tonight to run the line. However, Marciniak has not been without controversy off the pitch. He managed to keep his role in charge of the final after apologising for appearing at a far-right event in Poland last month, having spoken at an event organised by far-right leader Slawomir Mentzen. He said in a statement: “I want to express my deepest apologies for my involvement and any distress or harm it may have caused. “Upon reflection and further investigation, it has become evident that I was gravely misled and completely unaware of the true nature and affiliations of the event in question. I had no knowledge that it was associated [with] a Polish extreme-right movement. Had I been aware of this fact, I would have categorically declined the invitation. “It is important to understand that the values promoted by this movement are entirely contrary to my personal beliefs and the principles I strive to uphold in my life. I am deeply remorseful for any perception that my participation may have contradicted them.” Uefa said: “After conducting a thorough review, we have received a statement from Mr Marciniak expressing his deepest apologies and providing a clarification regarding his involvement in the event.” The 42-year-old refereed the second leg of City’s semi-final win against Real Madrid and has taken charge of seven other Champions League fixtures. Lewis Hamilton has revealed that the “bouncing” which overshadowed Mercedes’ 2022 Formula 1 season returned during Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion started the race at Spa-Francorchamps third on the grid but could not defend from eventual race winner Max Verstappen, nor pass Sergio Perez or Charles Leclerc up ahead. Hamilton pitted late on in an attempt to clinch the fastest lap and was successful, claiming an extra world championship point. It means the 38-year-old is now just one point behind third-placed Fernando Alonso in the standings but Hamilton had a point of concern to note after the race. “We had big bouncing this weekend, back to the bouncing like last year,” he told Sky F1. Mercedes’ 2022 season, off the back of eight-straight constructors’ titles, was overshadowed by bouncing and “porpoising” of their car on straights, making the ride uncomfortable and unsafe for Hamilton and team-mate George Russell. While the problem seemed to have been solved by the end of last season, Hamilton stated that the Mercedes engineers “don’t know” why the bouncing has returned 12 races into this season. “To me it is a concern,” he added “We’ll work through the data this week and try and work out what to do for the next race. “I know what I want, I’m praying for it and just waiting for the day we get it. “It was kind of a non-eventful race, not much going on. Having more female coaches in youth football will create more opportunities for women at the top of the sport, Hannah Dingley, the first woman to take charge of an English Football League club, has said. "Coaches get promoted from youth football. So the more female coaches we can get in the boys' game throughout the academy systems then I think it will happen more naturally," the newly-appointed caretaker Forest Green head coach said. Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber will see a specialist to determine the extent of his knee injury, with reports suggesting he is set for an extended spell on the sidelines. The Dutchman, signed from Ajax in a £38.5million summer transfer, limped off early in the second half of Saturday’s win over Nottingham Forest in the Gunners’ opening Premier League match. According to reports, Timber has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which if confirmed would see the Netherlands defender facing a lengthy spell of rehabilitation and possibly being out until early 2024.
