Luke Shaw has said he would take Harry Kane and Declan Rice at Manchester United “in a heartbeat” after half-jokingly trying to sign them up at Old Trafford. The left-back has revealed he has been trying to sell United to his England teammates, several of whom could be on the move this summer. Shaw posted an Instagram video giving Kane and Rice a tour of United’s training complex at Carrington, where England are preparing for Monday’s game against North Macedonia. While Erik ten Hag is looking for a striker and a midfielder this summer, neither Kane nor Rice is likely to join United, despite Shaw’s best efforts. “There is a lot of talk, a lot of banter,” he said. “I would love a few of them to join United, I am not going to lie. I am speaking to them, telling them how good Manchester is because I know their qualities. “I know they are world-class players and they would be a massive help to us but I can only say so much. It is up to the club and whatever they decide. They have been here the last couple of days and hopefully they like it and can get used to it!” Kane, who has attracted interest from Real Madrid, has a year left on his contract at Tottenham while Rice is expected to join Arsenal, though Manchester City are also tracking him, but United are favourites to sign Mason Mount. Shaw described his social-media video as “half joking”. He explained: “It is a bit of both. I know they are both world-class players and I don’t know what is going on at their clubs but if it was down to me, I would take them in a heartbeat and they would improve our team massively and help us go to what we want to achieve. “You could pick anyone in this squad and love them to come to this team. We have strength and depth. [They have] world-class abilities and any players that leave to go to another club this summer will only make the other team better.” Shaw, whose own future is secure after signing a new contract with United, said there have been plenty of discussions in the England squad about summer moves. He added: “Because of the situation of when this camp is and the situation of contracts running down, there is much more talk this time around than there has been in other years. “We read what is going on. Everton supporters have protested against the Premier League by flying a plane over the Etihad Stadium during Manchester City’s clash against Liverpool with a banner reading: “Premier League = Corrupt #UTFT #EFC” The protest comes on the back of an independent commission docking Everton 10-points for breaking the league’s profit and sustainability rules, a move which Toffees manager Sean Dyche described as ‘disproportionate’. There is a lot of unrest on Merseyside towards the Premier League for the sanction, which has sent Everton into the relegation zone, and today’s protest is the latest part of the ongoing saga. At his press conference ahead of this weekend’s fixtures, Dyche addressed the points deduction saying: “I think like everyone I was shocked and seemingly from the wave of noise after that, most people in football are shocked by the enormity of it. “Disproportionate is a word used by the club. Obviously we feel a bit aggrieved by that, but on the other hand it doesn’t change the focus. The focus since I got there is sorting things out on the pitch, getting the team to win. “This has just given us a push backwards to come forwards again. The job hasn’t changed. It’s just made it more difficult under the current circumstances until the appeal. “I don’t know every inch of the past, I don’t know why the commission have come out with what they have but I certainly believe in what the club put forward. It feels disproportionate, it feels unjust and plenty of voices out there feel the same. “What is done is done for now, appeal pending, and we have to get on with it.” While Everton don’t face Manchester United until tomorrow, the protestors potentially chose this game to fly their banner as a separate independent commission is looking over 115 charges brought against Man City for similar financial breaches, though theirs is an ongoing case of greater complexity. Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou has confirmed Giovani Lo Celso will feature in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie at Fulham, but the door appears closed on any Tanguy Ndombele comeback. Lo Celso and Ndombele both signed for Spurs in big-money moves during the summer of 2019, but have spent the majority of the last four years out on loan. Postecoglou’s June arrival provided everyone with a clean slate and, while Lo Celso came off the bench at Bournemouth on Saturday to make his first competitive Tottenham appearance in 18 months, Ndombele is in a different boat. Ndombele is part of a group alongside five other first-teamers who have not featured in any of the Australian’s three matchday squads and they could all leave the club before the summer transfer window shuts at 11pm on Friday. “Gio’s been a bit unlucky. He did well when he came on for us. I thought all the subs did really well just to help us control the game,” Postecoglou reflected. “We’ve got a game Tuesday night and he’ll play. It will be, for want of a better word, a fun week. We’ve got plenty going on for sure. “I’m just dealing with what’s in front of me. Unless I get told otherwise, I’ll work with the group I’ve got and focus on Tuesday night.” Ex-Spurs captain Hugo Lloris, Djed Spence, Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga and Sergio Reguilon are the players alongside Ndombele who have yet to be involved this season. I think this week a lot of those things I expect to get resolved.” Postecoglou could line-up with a midfield three of Skipp, Hojbjerg and Lo Celso at Fulham, but he is not expected to make wholesale changes. Josh Windass soars through the air and, in the most spectacular manner, Sheffield Wednesday keep going up. That may just be to the EFL Championship but the new Wembley has scarcely had moments as sensational as this. With a diving header to rival Keith Houchen’s famous FA Cup winner at the old Wembley, Darren Moore’s irrepressible team beat a young but spirited Barnsley in the very last moment of an epic match. This was maybe the only way to possibly top that sensational comeback against Peterborough, and the only way to do it justice. It was also, in the moment as much as much as the match itself, the only way to finish the game. It was certainly the most impressive and instinctive piece of improvisation, that has almost been the story of this rise through the play-offs for Moore’s side. They maybe shouldn’t have been here. They arguably shouldn’t have got this far, even on the day. Barnsley were the better side for most of the actual 90 from a contentious red card, but - as has been the case throughout this run - Moore has instilled this team with an incredible spirit. It has also imbued this historic club with something greater, and the sense of some grander for the future. They had to come through quite a battle here, as well as a fight, even if they initially made it like that. As the historically bigger club, with almost double the fans there and a far older team, it was symbolically fitting that Wednesday were inevitably seeking to physically dominate Barnsley. Moore’s side were launching balls wide and in behind, and such an aerial approach led to the only chance of the first half. Dominic Iorfa forced the first of some brilliant saves from Harry Isted. It was ironically as Barnsley attempted to match them for physicality, and initially suffered, that it brought out much more sharpness to their superior football. Duff’s side could feel aggrieved at how that went, though, and could certainly argue that two borderline VAR decisions went against them. For the first, Wednesday’s Lee Gregory visibly caught Liam Kitching on the calf. Referee Tim Robinson didn’t give a penalty and the VAR deemed that he didn’t make a clear and obvious error. It certainly wouldn’t have been controversial if the decision went the other way. Gregory then found himself at the centre of the next call, if this time on the receiving end. With the Wednesday striker running onto a ball in midfield, Adam Phillips went in rashly if not quite strongly. Robinson immediately sent him off. It again went to VAR, and VAR again stuck by the referee’s decision. Barnsley were not going to just dig in and stick 10 back, though. It was almost like they were more intent on beating Wednesday through pure football. What followed was their best spell of the game They began to batter the Wednesday goal, Nicky Cadden and James Norwood peppering shots at Cameron Dawson. The goalkeeper, undeniably Wednesday’s best player on the day, was nevertheless equal to them. He often surpassed himself, especially with two strong-handed stops that pushed driven efforts wide. Dawson could only look on with gratitude, though, as Cadden’s deflected volley bounced off the bar. He deserved it. And yet the save of the game still came from Isted. You could see one other reason Barnsley upped it after the red, since they evidently didn’t want to go into extra-time with 10 men. That inevitably brought fatigue, and Wednesday finally enjoyed a concerted spell of pressure. From that, though, nobody could surely have seen what Isted did next. Michael Smith was presented with the ball just yards out, but the goalkeeper somehow got a hand to it to palm it away. The atmosphere was by that point something else. It was an occasion that had that purity of exertion, both in terms of what the players were putting in and what it was taking out of the supporters. There was an audible gasp as Liam Kitching strode forward, Barnsley enjoying a rare burst of extra-time energy, to exploit a break in the Wednesday half. He fed it to Luke Thomas who displayed superb presence of mind to play it across for Luca Connell… only for the midfielder to blaze it wide. It was one of those efforts that was clearly an effect of tired legs. There was then a vintage piece of theatre, from a vintage piece of technique. Wednesday substitute Will Vaulks had smashed the ball into the top corner with the cleanest of strikes, to bring an explosion of emotion - but from both ends. As Vaulks careered around the pitch trailed by teammates and even fans, Barnsley supporters cheered the offside flag going up. The game seemed to be heading for penalties, something all the more enthralling given the goalkeepers had such superb performances. It was into the third minute of the three minutes of allotted stoppage time. There was somehow more to come, though. The comeback against Peterborough was about to have a further crescendo. Gregory, the player who might have given away a penalty, played a cross in. There was Windass flying through the air, to send the ball past Isted, and Wednesday back to the Championship. Representatives of Conor McGregor have denied allegations the former UFC champion sexually assaulted a woman at a basketball match last week. The Irish mixed martial arts star has been accused of the assault in a bathroom at game four of the NBA Finals in Miami on June 9. A statement from McGregor’s lawyer Barbara Llanes said: “The allegations are false. Mr McGregor will not be intimidated.” The NBA and Miami Heat said they were investigating the allegations that Mr McGregor assaulted a woman in a bathroom after the match. A statement from the Miami Heat, who were facing the Denver Nuggets in the finals, said: “We are aware of the allegations and are conducting a full investigation. Pending the outcome of the investigation, we will withhold further comment.” UFC said it would “allow the legal process to play out” before making any additional comments. In a statement, the mixed martial arts organisation said: “The organisation is aware of the recent allegations regarding Conor McGregor and will continue to gather additional details regarding the incident.” The complainant’s lawyer said her client had provided Miami police with the clothes she was wearing at the time. The incident is alleged to have happened on the same night Mr McGregor injured a mascot in a promotional stunt. A Heat employee inside the costume of the team’s mascot Burnie required medical attention after two punches from the fighter during a stoppage during the third quarter. The team said he received pain medication and was recovering. Mr McGregor, who was booed by many in the crowd, was at the match to perform the promotional piece for a pain-relief spray and hit the mascot with left hook, punching him again after he had hit the floor. He then tried to apply the spray while Heat staff dragged the mascot off the court. Mr McGregor has not fought since injuring his left leg in a loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021. His last win came in January 2020.

Carl Froch has delivered a brutal assessment of Anthony Joshua’s performance against Robert Helenius, accusing the British heavyweight of fighting like a ‘beginner’. Joshua knocked out Helenius, a late-notice replacement for Dillian Whyte, in Round 7 on Saturday (12 August) after fighting tentatively in the first six rounds. Despite “AJ” securing the emphatic knockout that he needed en route to a potential clash with Deontay Wilder, the former two-time world heavyweight champion did not do enough to impress Froch. Froch, a former unified super-middleweight champion, said on YouTube on Friday (18 August): “For me, it was a 5/10 performance. Okay, he got the job done, he knocked out Helenius in Round 7 with a decent [shot]. Helenius was exhausted by that point, which is why I thought the knockout came. “AJ timed him nicely with a jab to the body then brought the right hand over the top [...] I don’t think [Helenius] was knocked out cold, but he was exhausted. Once he got hit with that shot and went over, he probably thought to himself: ‘You know what? I’ve earnt my money, I’m not gonna win the fight, I’m not getting paid for overtime. Let’s stay down and go home.’ Why wouldn’t he? He boxed a week earlier. “It was poor, it was a weak opponent for this stage of AJ’s career, when he’s now looking at fighting someone like Deontay Wilder. If he’s looking at fighting Deontay Wilder on the back of that performance... that performance was awful, it was terrible, it was such a bad performance in so many ways. It was tentative, it was gun shy.” Helenius replaced Whyte after the Briton failed a drug test in the lead-up to his planned rematch with Joshua, who is in talks to box Wilder in early 2024. “He looked like he didn’t want to be in there at times,” Froch said of Joshua, 33. “He was getting outboxed with a weak, poor jab; [Helenius] wasn’t setting it up, he was smashing it, ram-rodding it in AJ’s face [...] Anthony Joshua was sitting back, waiting, looking confused, looking like he was scared to throw. “He’s not ready for the Deontay Wilder fight, I really don’t think he is. That performance does not set him up for a big showdown with Wilder [...] Style-wise, AJ is like a beginner, like a novice pro. Helenius had absolutely busted up AJ behind the jab. “[There was] swelling under his eyes, his nose was p***ing with blood, his mouth was bleeding – as we saw when he jumped out of the ring, which was a bit strange, and had a slurp on that nasty Irish stout that Conor McGregor shoved in his face. He had all blood and sweat and snot inside that point.” Froch, 46, also branded his fellow Briton “unprofessional” and “disrespectful” for the interaction with UFC star McGregor, which took place at ringside while Helenius received medical attention. Joshua vs Wilder is in the works for an early 2024 date in Saudi Arabia. American Wilder, 37, has not fought since knocking out Helenius in Round 1 in October.
