Jurgen Klopp sold Curtis Jones ‘the right-back idea with the captaincy’
Jurgen Klopp sold Curtis Jones ‘the right-back idea with the captaincy’
Jurgen Klopp joked that he used the promise of the captain’s armband to sell Curtis Jones on the idea of playing right-back for Liverpool in Wednesday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup win over Leicester. Jones was the only player retained from Saturday’s 3-1 win over West Ham, but dropped back from midfield to fill in on the right side of defence in the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez, with Stefan Bajcetic on the bench after playing right-back against LASK last week. Even with plenty of experience in the side, the 22-year-old Jones took the armband as he adjusted to a new role. “Yesterday, when I told him he will play right-back, I sold the right-back idea with the captaincy,” Klopp said. “He was already completely excited when I told him he would play right-back, and the way he executed it was super special, I have to say. Wow. “We thought about him because we couldn’t play Stefan, we have to be careful with him. Joey will be OK for the weekend (away to Tottenham) but was not OK for today so we have to find solutions and Curtis was always in my mind as a potential solution. “He enjoys being on the ball and the deeper you are the more often you can get the ball. It was a top performance I have to say for the first time in for him a strange position. I liked that. He’s in a good moment and could probably play each position. “But we will try to use him as often as possible in his natural position.” Jones was one of several Liverpool players to earn praise from Klopp after their come-from-behind victory. He was already completely excited when I told him he would play right-back, and the way he executed it was super special, I have to say. Wow Jurgen Klopp on Curtis Jones Dominik Szoboszlai took the headlines after hitting a superb strike to give Liverpool the lead just five minutes after coming off the bench, completing the turnaround after Cody Gakpo’s goal early in the second half had cancelled out Kasey McAteer’s effort, with Diogo Jota getting a late third. But Klopp reeled off a list of several performances he was impressed by, including those from Wataru Endo, Jarell Quansah, Harvey Elliott, and Ryan Gravenberch. “There were super signs, I really like that a lot,” Klopp said. “The boys enjoyed playing it and you saw how they were pressing until the last second. They really enjoyed it and that’s cool. “Minute by minute, we grew into that game and it was a top performance, to be honest. “With all the quality of Leicester, we have to admit that as well, super-coached team obviously, super set-up, you can pretty much see, feel and smell the confidence they have because of their situation, so that made life difficult. “But we kept going and improved during the game as a team clearly but individually as well, a lot of performances stepped up and here we are, and I like that a lot.” Read More Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide Ukraine war’s heaviest fight rages in east - follow live Can United, City or Arsenal dethrone champions Chelsea? – WSL talking points Pep Guardiola takes positives from Man City display despite Carabao Cup exit Eddie Howe hails ‘absolutely outstanding’ Paul Dummett after Man City scalp

Victor Lindelof struck by object thrown from crowd in FA Cup final
Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof was struck by an object thrown from the crowd celebrating his team’s equaliser against Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley. Lindelof was hit as the Manchester United players celebrated in front of the Manchester City supporters following a controversial penalty, which was scored by Bruno Fernandes. The object, which appeared to be a lighter, was thrown from the end where the Manchester City fans were sitting and hit Lindelof near his left eye. City took the lead after just 13 seconds - the fastest goal in FA Cup final history - but United were awarded a penalty later in the first half for a handball on Jack Grealish. Lindelof continued to play on after being hit by the object and appeared to escape injury. Erik ten Hag: Sir Bobby Charlton will always remain an inspiration to Man Utd
Erik ten Hag: Sir Bobby Charlton will always remain an inspiration to Man Utd
Erik ten Hag believes Sir Bobby Charlton will always remain an inspiration to Manchester United as they prepare for their first home game since the World Cup-winner died on Saturday. Tributes to Charlton, who was 86, will take place before Tuesday’s Champions League fixture against Copenhagen, in the form of a minute’s silence, a wreath being placed on Charlton’s seat in the directors’ box and players and club staff wearing black armbands. Charlton will also be remembered in the official programme for both the Copenhagen match and Sunday’s derby against Manchester City. There will be a minute’s applause prior to the City match as well as expressions of remembrance via flags and banners in the stadium. Fans have already been flocking to Old Trafford to leave flowers, scarves and messages around the statue of Charlton, Denis Law and George Best – the ‘United Trinity’ – which is located outside the ground. And when asked if Charlton would be an inspiration for his side not only on Tuesday but beyond, Ten Hag pointed to the statue. “He is in front of Old Trafford,” Ten Hag said. “With Denis Law and George Best. He is always with us. They are always a huge inspiration for us, every day, and in every game.” Ten Hag cited Charlton as an inspiration for his players in Saturday’s 2-1 win away to Sheffield United, secured by Diogo Dalot’s winner, but a match at Old Trafford will be an opportunity for the entire club to pay tribute on and off the pitch. Ten Hag wants to mark the occasion with a victory, something United badly need in the Champions League after opening their Group A campaign with defeats against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray, while they have stuttered in the Premier League too. “First we want to win as a tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton, but also you want always to do that in a certain way and that is what we are aiming for,” Ten Hag added. “It is not always possible in football, sometimes you don’t play that well but you have to find a way to win. “I was happy on Saturday that we could show tribute with a win but also with the way we scored that second goal.” Although they ground out the victory, United were again far from their best in Saturday’s win over the Blades, with social media full of grumbling from fans amid a pedestrian start to the campaign. But Ten Hag said he continues to feel the firm backing of the supporters inside Old Trafford, and expects a special atmosphere on Tuesday night. “It’s always special every night at Old Trafford, the fans are always so behind us,” the Dutchman said. “I remember the last game, the home game against Brentford, even when the game is not going in our direction they stayed behind us in difficult moments and moments of adversity around Manchester United the fans are still with us and we are with the fans, we are fighting together. “Definitely tomorrow after the passing away of Sir Bobby Charlton, their hero, their legend, their giant, I’m sure there will be an even more emotional evening tomorrow.” Read More Mikel Arteta hopes to be talking about football after Arsenal’s trip to Sevilla Jean Kleyn: RWC final with South Africa ‘outside realm of thinking’ months ago Joe Root acknowledges growing uncertainty surrounding future of ODI cricket 5 things we learned from England’s progress through the Rugby World Cup Jonny May backs ‘genius’ Steve Borthwick to crack the code of rugby with England Muddled selection, ageing squad and no new blood – England’s World Cup problems

When is the 2023 Sidemen charity match and who is playing?
When is the 2023 Sidemen charity match and who is playing?
The Sidemen are back with another massive game for charity this year, and it’s set to be bigger than ever before. The collective have hosted a match to raise money for a good cause since back in 2016, and last year’s event proved to be one of the most entertaining moments in the YouTube calendar. The game was hosted at Charlton Athletic's The Valley. It saw The Sidemen beat the YouTube Allstars 8-7, with the event raising an incredible £2m for charity. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter This year, things are going up a notch – here’s everything you need to know. When is the 2023 Sidemen charity match? This year’s Sidemen match will take place on Saturday, September 9. A kick-off time has yet to be confirmed, but it’s expected to be at 3pm. Where is it being held? The 2023 match will take place at 62,500-capacity London Stadium in Stratford, London. Given the success of last year, it’s not surprising to see the event take place in a bigger venue. Graham Gilmore, CEO of London Stadium, said after the venue was announced: “This event goes from strength to strength, with the move to London Stadium demonstrating the success The Sidemen have built over recent years, not only in bringing so many great names together, but raising money for important charities too. "In addition, we will be delighted to welcome the huge global audience on streaming and digital channels, who will be joining the 60k plus fans in the Stadium!” Who is playing this year? The official line-up has yet to be announced, but the Sidemen members will be taking part. The group includes KSI, Behzinga, Miniminter, Vikkstar123, Zerkaa, TBJZL and W2S. As ever, the YouTube Allstars will likely be made up of some of the most popular names on the platform and it has been confirmed that MrBeast will play. More names will be announced in due course, although the likes of Chunkz, Mr Beast, iShowSpeed and Yung Filly all took part last year, while Mark Goldbridge was their manager. Rapper Aitch will also be performing at halftime during the show this year. Are tickets still available? Unfortunately, no tickets are available after all 62,000 tickets sold in less than 90 minutes after going on sale earlier this year. How can I watch? Details have yet to be confirmed, but the game was streamed for free via The Sidemen's YouTube channel last year. Which charities are being supported? Charities being supported this year include Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), Teenage Cancer Trust and Rays of Sunshine. "This is a major milestone for us," Zerkaa said. "When we first set up this event back in 2016, we never thought we'd be playing in a stadium of over 62,000 people. "Not only are we able to give back to our loyal fans, but being able to raise further funds for charities that are so close to our hearts give us a lot to be proud and thankful for. We can't wait to see all of you in September." Have your say in our news democracy. Click the upvote icon at the top of the page to help raise this article through the indy100 rankings.
