Neymar taken off on a stretcher playing for Brazil against Uruguay
Neymar was in tears after being taken off the field on a stretcher with an apparent left knee injury during Brazil’s 2-0 defeat to Uruguay in World Cup qualifying. Brazil were trailing to a Darwin Nunez opener when Neymar landed awkwardly after colliding with Nicolas de la Cruz just before half-time. The 31-year-old former Barcelona forward, who joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal from Paris St Germain in the summer, was carried off in some distress as he cupped his hands to his face. After De la Cruz made sure of Uruguay’s win, Neymar was reportedly seen leaving the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo on crutches. “Let’s hope it’s nothing serious,” Brazil captain and Manchester United midfielder Casemiro said on Globo television. “He’s an important player for us, we’re very fond of him. He’s been suffering a lot from injuries and when he starts to pick up the pace he gets injured again.” Elsewhere, Lionel Messi became the all-time leading scorer in South American World Cup qualifying as he bagged a brace in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Peru. Messi’s 31 goals take him clear of former Barcelona team-mate and Uruguay forward Luis Suarez, who has 29. Argentina top the qualifying table having won all four fixtures. Lewis Hamilton makes Red Bull judgement after surprise pole in Hungary
Lewis Hamilton makes Red Bull judgement after surprise pole in Hungary
Lewis Hamilton insists Red Bull’s pace advantage has reduced after the Mercedes star claimed a surprise pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The 38-year-old, whose previous F1 pole was back in December 2021 in Saudi Arabia, beat Max Verstappen to top spot in Budapest by 0.003 seconds in a thrilling end to qualifying. It was Hamilton’s 104th pole position – 18 months after his 103rd – and his ninth at the Hungaroring, breaking the record for the most pole positions at one circuit. While sceptical of his chances tomorrow, the seven-time world champion believes Red Bull’s significant pace has dropped off in the last few race weekends. “Honestly I think they’ve [Red Bull] slowed down from the beginning of the year,” he said. “Where’s the DRS advantage gone? But in the race they’re still the quickest, it’ll be very hard to beat them tomorrow. “But it’s definitely interesting to see some of the deficits and see how it’s changed race-to-race.” Hamilton was elated after the pole position though, and he will line-up alongside Verstappen on the front row for the first time since the infamous end to the 2021 season in Abu Dhabi. “It feels like my first pole, believe it or not,’ Hamilton said. “Feels strange to say that with 104. I don’t remember the last time it feels so long ago! “We weren’t expecting that going into the weekend, car felt terrible yesterday. “I just sent it! Nothing to lose. Threw it into the high-speed corners, it was a great, great lap!” Lando Norris qualified third for McLaren, with his team-mate Oscar Piastri in fourth. Las Vegas F1: Jacques Villeneuve becomes first driver to get married in GP paddock
Former F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve married his partner in the Las Vegas Grand Prix paddock on Thursday night (16 November). A wedding chapel was set up so anybody tempted to tie the knot in Sin City could “Race to the Altar” - and Villeneuve took full advantage. His partner Giulia wore a stunning dress for the occasion and the happy couple were then seen posing for photos. Villeneuve’s former Williams engineer, Jock Clear, was best man as the 1997 world champion became the first - and likely last - F1 driver to get married on the track. His wedding came hours before a chaotic first practice session was cancelled.
