Everton points penalty ‘draconian’ and ‘too harsh’ say Premier League protesters
Everton fans have staged a protest outside the Premier League’s headquarters in London in response to the club’s 10-point punishment for breaching financial regulations. The Toffees were handed the sanction by an independent commission last week after they exceeded losses permitted under the league’s profitability and sustainability rules by £19.5million in the three seasons ending in 2021-22. Manager Sean Dyche expressed shock at the “disproportionate” penalty on Friday, a sentiment shared by the fans who gathered outside the Premier League’s offices in Paddington, west London. Paul, 36, who lives in East Dulwich but is originally from St Helens, is a season-ticket holder who will be at Sunday’s game against Manchester United. He told the PA news agency that the points deduction “felt draconian”, adding: “It just feels like the rules were deliberately vague to give flexibility for this kind of situation. “I think Everton have been deliberately targeted because of the threat of an independent regulator, and that feels wrong.” Alan Newton, 46, who lives in London but is originally from Maghull, held a season ticket for 10 years. He told PA: “Nobody’s saying that we’re not guilty as a club of anything, but the points that have been taken off is far too harsh a penalty. “Do I think that some of the other bigger clubs are going to get penalties like this or it’s going to play out the same? Probably not. “I think the likelihood is we’ll get a reduced penalty, it’ll set a precedent for other clubs and we’ll see what happens next.” The points deduction has left Everton 19th in the table and above bottom side Burnley only on goal difference. However, Amy Panayi, 28, who lives in Gravesend but is originally from Liverpool, does not believe the club will be relegated. “If we just get consistency with your teams like Manchester City and Chelsea, I will take a 10-point deduction,” she told PA. “I will say I don’t think we will go down, because there’s too much fight (and) heart there.” Read More Australia see off Finland to reach Davis Cup final for second-successive year Neil Robertson not worried by slide down rankings ahead of UK Championship Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool can benefit from Alexis Mac Allister’s deeper role Kevin Sinfield says time is of the essence as he prepares to run for MND again LTA urges British tennis fans to show ‘respect’ after Novak Djokovic row at Davis Cup Erik ten Hag prepared for Everton to be ‘mad’ and urges Man Utd to match them

Man Utd agree record £900 million adidas kit deal
Manchester United have renewed their kit sponsorship with adidas in a deal that will be worth almost £1 billion. It is the biggest kit deal in Premier League history and guarantees United a minimum of £90 million per year for 10 seasons. Adidas have been United’s shirt suppliers for the last eight years and their partnership will now last a minimum of 18 years. The Carabao Cup winners reported record sales for both their men’s and women’s teams kits last season and said the new contract continues “Manchester United and adidas commitment to drive the women’s game forward.” United CEO Richard Arnold added: “The relationship between Manchester United and adidas is one of the most iconic in world sport, forged through a shared commitment to style, flair and, most importantly, high performance. “With its roots in the 1980s, our partnership has been reinvented over the past decade with some of the most innovative designs and technology in sportswear. We are now looking forward to refreshing this powerful partnership again through the remainder of this decade and into the 2030s.” Bjorn Gulden, the CEO of adidas, said: “We look forward to continuing our partnership with one of the most iconic clubs in football.” On pitch-related matters, United continue to chase the signing of Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojland, with a £64m fee agreed for the Dane according to weekend reports. They have already signed goalkeeper Andre Onana this summer and midfielder Mason Mount, as manager Erik ten Hag looks to rebuild a team capable of challenging for major honours. Erik ten Hag sends strong message to Harry Maguire as Manchester United exit looms
Erik ten Hag has told Harry Maguire to go to West Ham if he is not confident enough to fight for his place at Old Trafford. Manchester United have accepted a £30m bid from the Hammers for their former captain, who has dropped out of the team as Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have become the first-choice centre-back partnership. But while Ten Hag insisted he wants to keep Maguire as he hopes to have two players for every spot in the side, he believes the England international should go if he does not believe he can get back into the side. “He has to fight for his place,” the United manager said. “He has the ability to be a top-class centre-back and he is the best for England so why shouldn’t he be the best for us? But he has to prove it. When he is not confident enough to fight then he has to go, then he has to make a decision, but I’m happy with him. “We don’t have a squad with 11 players, and the last year proved definitely we need all the players. That means you need some high-level players who are maybe not starting but that can change so there is an internal competition, everyone has to fight for his place. “Every player when they were good they will get their games but no one can play all the games and finally you find out what is the best team. In the squad now all the positions are double and every player has the perspective to fight for his place. You have to show with your contribution it’s the best team performance. It is up to the players if they have game time or less.” Ten Hag also suggested he could keep Dean Henderson. United have been in talks with Nottingham Forest about the goalkeeper but with third-choice Tom Heaton out for several weeks, United may be reluctant to let Henderson leave. Ten Hag added: “He was always in my mind so I think we have a strong keeper group with Onana, Henderson and Heaton.”
