UFC 290 fight card: Volkanovski vs Rodriguez and all bouts this weekend
UFC 290 fight card: Volkanovski vs Rodriguez and all bouts this weekend
The UFC featherweight titles will be unified this weekend, as Alexander Volkanovski takes on interim champion Yair Rodriguez in a main-event clash. The pair headline UFC 290 in Las Vegas, where Volkanovski will try to maintain his dominance at 145lbs, following a brave but unsuccessful bid to win the lightweight title in February. The Australian lost a narrow decision to 155lbs champion Islam Makhachev in Perth, at the same event where Rodriguez submitted Josh Emmett to win the interim featherweight belt. In the co-main event on Saturday, Brandon Moreno defends his flyweight title against a foe who has beaten him twice: Alexandre Pantoja. Moreno has improved significantly since those losses in 2016 and 2018, but this bout marks a difficult defence to kickstart the Mexican’s second reign as champion. Here’s all you need to know. When is it? UFC 290 will take place on Saturday 8 July, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The early prelims are set to begin at 11pm BST (3pm PT, 5pm CT, 6pm ET), with the regular prelims following at 1am BST on Sunday 9 July (5pm PT, 7pm CT, 8pm ET on Saturday). The main card is then due to begin at 3am BST on Sunday (7pm PT, 9pm CT, 10pm ET on Saturday). How can I watch it? The card will air live on BT Sport in the UK, with the broadcaster’s app and website also streaming the fights. In the US, ESPN+ will stream the action live, as will the UFC’s Fight Pass. Millwall owner John Berylson dies in ‘tragic accident’
Millwall’s owner and chairman Berylson has died at the age of 70 in “a tragic accident”, the club announced. The Lions confirmed the news in a statement posted on Twitter on Tuesday night. The statement read that Berylson, 70, who first became involved with the club in 2006, had died in an accident on Tuesday morning. “It is with a collective broken heart and the deepest of regret that we announce the passing of our beloved owner and chairman, John Berylson,” Millwall posted. “John, who turned 70 last month, lost his life in a tragic accident on Tuesday morning, and the thoughts of everyone at the club are with his wife, Amy, his three children, Jennifer, James, and Elizabeth, and the rest of the Berylson family. “John’s sudden and tragic passing will unquestionably impact all those who were fortunate to have known him. He was a truly great man, incredibly devoted to his family, and a person of such remarkable generosity, warmth, and kindness. “He lived a storied life, one full of colour and joy, and was infinitely thoughtful of others with an endless desire to share his immense knowledge and experiences to help people. “Under John’s passionate leadership and guidance, Millwall has enjoyed tremendous success and stability. “Since first becoming involved in the club in 2006, he has presided over some of the greatest moments in Millwall’s history, and his influence in providing the platform for those was immeasurable. “John continued to speak eagerly about the new season and his vision for the future, and any success moving forward will be in his memory and honour. It will be his legacy. “John revelled in the club’s underdog status and mentality. He related strongly to such values and identity and adored Millwall supporters. He was fiercely loyal to all his staff, and both they and the fan base will miss him beyond measure.” Millwall have not released any further details around Berylson’s death but the club will allow fans to pay their respects in a book of condolence. Supporters can write in the book, which will then be shared with Berylson’s family, at The Den on Wednesday from 11am, or online. The English Football League tweeted: “The EFL is shocked and saddened by the news and sends its deepest condolences to John’s family and everyone connected with Millwall.” Former Millwall defender Alan Dunne, who made almost 350 appearances for the club, was also among those to post a tribute. “My deepest condolences to not only my Chairman for many years but also friend,” Dunne said on Twitter. “John was a gentleman who put Millwall back on the map. What he has done for the club will always be remembered and can only thank him for everything he done for me and MILLWALL. Rip JB.” Millwall’s fierce rivals West Ham also sent their condolences, writing: “Everyone at West Ham United sends their deepest condolences to John’s family, friends and all at Millwall FC during this tragic time.” Additional reporting by PA Read More Steven Reid returns to Nottingham Forest as first-team coach Mason Mount announces Chelsea exit Football rumours: Saudi clubs join growing interest in Thiago Alcantara Mason Mount announces Chelsea exit Football rumours: Saudi clubs join growing interest in Thiago Alcantara Hannah Dingley makes history after being named Forest Green caretaker head coach

Gabriel Jesus ‘changed Arsenal’s world last season’, says Mikel Arteta
Gabriel Jesus ‘changed Arsenal’s world last season’, says Mikel Arteta
Mikel Arteta lauded “tremendous” Gabriel Jesus who he claims “changed Arsenal’s world last season”. Gunners boss Arteta could start the Brazil striker for the first time this term at Everton on Sunday after he recovered from a spate of injuries. Jesus has made two substitute appearances in the Premier League this season, scoring last time out in the 3-1 victory over Manchester United on September 3. But Arteta insists the former Manchester City forward’s game is about more than goals. “He is a tremendous player,” said Arteta, whose side finished runners-up in the Premier League in 2022-23. “A really important player for us. He changed our world last season. You could all see that. He is going to be a really important player for us. “I think he brought a different energy, a different belief, a different threat, a different fear to opponents. “And he did it in a really natural way and I think he contributed hugely to the step that we had last season. “He tracks a lot of attention and players in the way he plays and creates space for others and that’s a big quality. “When you sign a player you know, who has done it in the league and he’s got the hunger to join us for the right reasons – it was a no-brainer for us to do it and we could see the impact he had straight away in the team.” Arsenal’s last win at Goodison Park came in 2017 and they have scored just twice in their last five visits. Former Everton player Arteta talked up Sean Dyche’s side and identified the levels his players need to be at if they are to take all three points. “For me Everton’s quality is not physicality, it’s what they do and they play really well and Sean (Dyche) does well at doing that,” Arteta added. “Just talking about physicality doesn’t reflect the qualities they have, the reasons they do it, the intentions they have, how they build sequences and momentum in matches. There’s a lot of work there so it is much deeper than that in my opinion. Just talking about physicality doesn't reflect the qualities they have, the reasons they do it, the intentions they have, how they build sequences and momentum in matches. Arteta on Everton “They know (Arsenal players on how hard Everton away is). Obviously we have experienced it so there’s a level of focus and attention you need when you play against a team like that.” Arteta praised Eddie Nketiah after he featured in Gareth Southgate’s England squad earlier this month, despite the striker not playing a single minute during victories against Ukraine and Scotland. He said: “I think it’s a big point to be named in the England national team, it’s a big point. “I was really happy and proud of him and it’s the coaching staff’s decision (on who starts) and he’s going to have to earn the right to play, that shows you the level there is there.” Read More Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide Ukraine war’s heaviest fight rages in east - follow live Europe’s 12 Ryder Cup members make cut at BMW PGA Championship On this day in 2018: Simon Yates seals British Grand Tours treble at La Vuelta Justin Thomas finds crucial glimpse of form as Ryder Cup looms
