How much does Sarina Wiegman get paid compared to Gareth Southgate?
Sarina Wiegman has quite the record. As well as leading England's Lionesses to the World Cup final this tournament, the Dutch football manager won the Euros for England in 2022, has won 18 out of 19 major tournament games, took the Netherlands to the 2019 final in France and even has a 79 per cent win rate as England boss. This is not too shabby for a manager, and yet Wiegman earns far less than Gareth Southgate, who manages the men's England team. Indeed, it has been reported she earns £400,000 which although is a staggering amount of money by most people's standards, is pennies compared to Southgate's rumoured £5 million. This could potentially change soon, as The English Football Association will consider Lionesses coach Wiegman as a candidate to take charge of the senior men's team if, or when, Southgate moves on from his role as manager, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said. "People always say it is the best man for the job or the best Englishman," Bullingham said on Thursday. "Why does it have to be a man? "I think our answer is always: 'it's the best person for the job.' We think Sarina is doing a great job and hope she continues doing it for a long time. I think Sarina could do anything she wants in football. "If at some point in the future she decides she wants to move into the men's game, that would be a really interesting discussion, but that's for her, right? "I don't think we should view it as a step up. If she decides at some point in the future to go in a different direction, I think she's perfectly capable of that. "It's the best person for the job, if that best person is a woman, then why not? You analyse the pool for any job at that particular time and do I think there's a really strong diverse pool of both men and women for any big national job? "No, I think the talent pool is small for both actually. But I don't like the mindset that it has to be a man." Southgate's contract runs until the end of the Euro 2024. Maybe then Wiegman will get the coffers she deserves. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Josko Gvardiol close to making £77.5m move to Manchester City
Manchester City are closing in on a £77.5 million (€90m) deal for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol. Leipzig were said to be holding out for a fee of 100m euros (£86m) for the Croatia international. But City have broken through and are now closing in on the transfer, with Gvardiol expected to have a medical later this week. Gvardiol would add competition on the left side of City’s defence, having helped Croatia reach the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup and then the final of the Nations League, where they were beaten by Spain. Midfielder Mateo Kovacic is so far City’s only summer signing, with the Croatian having moved from Chelsea during June. City saw captain Ilkay Gundogan leave for Barcelona on a free transfer and Riyad Mahrez last week completed a switch to Saudi Arabia club Al-Ahli in a £30m deal. Man United allow Antony to resume training despite assault investigations
Manchester United have decided Antony can resume training and will be allowed to play for the club during ongoing police inquiries after three women accused him of assault. The winger had taken a leave of absence, without being suspended by the club. He has missed United’s last four matches and will not feature in Saturday’s home game against Crystal Palace. His former partner, Gabriela Cavallin, made accusations of abuse in an interview with Brazilian newspaper UOL. Two further women, Rayssa de Freitas and Ingrid Lana, then made separate allegations against the 23-year-old. Antony has insisted he is innocent and has spoken to police in both Brazil and England. He voluntarily attended an interview with Greater Manchester Police on Thursday and submitted his phone for investigation. He also spoke to police in Sao Paulo in June and has not yet been arrested or charged in either country. United said in a statement: “Since allegations were first made in June, Antony has cooperated with police inquiries in both Brazil and the UK, and he continues to do so. “As Antony’s employer, Manchester United has decided that he will resume training at Carrington, and be available for selection, while police inquiries proceed. This will be kept under review pending further developments in the case. “As a club we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognise the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.” Manager Erik ten Hag stated Antony will return to training on Saturday and expects him to be fit. “I have to see but I think so,” he said in a press conference later in the afternoon. Cavallin claimed she was attacked by Antony last summer, when she was pregnant and before she suffered a miscarriage. She said the £86m signing had threatened to throw her out of a car and alleged the footballer punched and headbutted her in January 2023. Antony issued a statement on 10 September in which he said: “I want to reiterate my innocence of the things I have been accused of, and I will fully cooperate with the police to help them reach the truth.” Read More Antony return to Manchester United will not be a distraction – Erik ten Hag Erik ten Hag reveals cause of Manchester United’s injury woes Manchester United suffer another injury blow to defender
