Inter Milan are the first club set for the 2023 Champions League final, after knocking out city rivals AC Milan with a 1-0 victory in the second leg. The goalkeepers were the stars of the show in the first half, both making fine stops, but the breakthrough finally came with just 15 minutes to play as Lautaro Martinez hammered in at the near post to seal a 3-0 aggregate win. Here are the player ratings from the second leg in the San Siro: Inter Milan Andre Onana - 7. Big save early on from Diaz. Not too troubled thereafter and always a safe pair of hands. Matteo Darmian - 7. Dealt comfortably with any threats down his side of the defensive trio. Francesco Acerbi - 8. Rugged, aggressive and dominant. Beat Giroud in the air every time. A little fortunate not to get caught purposely stepping on an opponent’s foot, though. Alessandro Bastoni - 7. Solid enough at the back. Wasn’t really called upon to do a huge amount of one-v-one work but his positional play, strength and passing from deep all meant Milan just couldn’t get through easily. Denzel Dumfries - 7. Again an impressive outing as he covered ground, dragged play upfield and shut down Leao when he needed to. Nicolo Barella - 7. The usual mix of aggression, bursts into the channel and good work to support the attack. A bit hot-headed, picked up a booking and caused a few ructions. Henrikh Mkhitaryan - 6. Carried the ball well a few times and got into a couple of dangerous positions but went off injured before half time. Hakan Calhanoglu - 6. Neat in possession, sensible with his forward runs. Mostly played a protective game in the centre and let Barella break beyond him. Federico Dimarco - 6. Not his best game on the ball but had plenty of times where he was a good outlet for the team and drove upfield at pace. Lautaro Martinez - 8. Full of running and clever touches in deep areas. Went close in the first half and then found the breakthrough with a drilled, low shot which beat Maignan at the near post. Edin Dzeko - 6. Hard-working and had a couple of sighters, but more about his hold-up play than penalty box prowess this time. Subs: M Brozovic 6, R Lukaku 8, R Gosens 6, J Correa n/a, R Gagliardini n/a AC Milan Mike Maignan - 7. Two excellent first-half saves highlighted his shot-stopping ability and good positional work. Beaten near post for the goal but it was a rocket from close range. Davide Calabria - 5. Started the game well but never really had much impact going forward. Malick Thiaw - 6. Fared better than Simon Kjaer did in the first leg with better power and speed in the channel, but after a booking had to be replaced. Fikayo Tomori - 7. Again, better than he played in the first fixture but the damage was already done there. He had a pretty decent outing but still couldn’t help keep a clean sheet. Theo Hernandez - 6. One of Milan’s biggest underperformers across the two legs, given what he’s capable of. Had an early shot and tracked back well plenty of times but ultimately got nowhere going forward. Sandro Tonali - 7. One brilliant driving run down the left created Milan’s best early opening. Was the one really trying to drive the team forward for most of the match but too few matched his endeavour. Rade Krunic - 6. Harder-working than last week but no better with playing forward. Left massive gaps which Barella just rampaged through. Junior Messias - 5. Like the rest of the attack, the Brazilian had a couple of decent individual moments but nowhere near enough positive team play or combinations. Brahim Diaz - 5. Massive chance in the opening minutes, on target but saved. Other than the first 15 minutes he was largely anonymous. Rafael Leao - 5. In and out of the game first half but fired one great strike across the face of goal. Totally marginalised second half and faded away. Olivier Giroud - 5. No service, no real hold-up play, no chance of beating Acerbi and no threat on goal. Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne says the new approach to added time “doesn’t make any sense” and warns overworked players face up to 25 minutes being tagged on to some games. Competitions around the world have been instructed to more accurately calculate time lost to stoppages this season, including goal celebrations and VAR checks. Arsenal equalised in the 11th of 13 added minutes at the end of Sunday’s Community Shield against Manchester City and went on to win on penalties. The change in approach follows a directive from the game’s lawmaking body, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which believes it will lead to a reduction in time-wasting and an increase in effective playing time. The move was largely positively received when it was first trialled at last year’s men’s World Cup in Qatar, but De Bruyne is not convinced. “We spoke to the Arsenal players and even the referees (about it) – they don’t even want to do it, but it’s the new rule and it’s what it is,” he said after Sunday’s match at Wembley. “A game like today, even the first half with three minutes extra, you can only guess what’s going to happen if you play a lower team who keep timewasting all the time. “Today we played 12 to 13 minutes. I can see games going for 20-25 minutes (extra). I think this will change in one to two months, but this is the first game. “I’m thinking if we play Sevilla in Olympiakos (in the UEFA Super Cup) on Wednesday (August 16) and have 15-20 extra minutes and then play on Saturday again (against Newcastle) it’s like two times extra time. “We’ll see how it goes, but it doesn’t make any sense.” Players from the Manchester clubs met with Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) chief executive Maheta Molango last week and expressed their concerns about the change in approach. A PFA spokesperson added: “Across what is now essentially a year-long football season, players are already thinking of these additional minutes in terms of extra games being played. “It also comes at a time when players are pushing back against what is, increasingly, a completely unsustainable football calendar.” World players’ union FIFPRO published a report earlier this year which found players with high workloads could face the equivalent of three extra games per season if the levels of added time witnessed at the World Cup in Qatar were sustained over the course of a campaign. At the PFA meeting last week was Manchester United defender Raphael Varane, who spoke out earlier on Monday about the “damaging” impact of the changes which he said had come in without consulting players. Varane retired from international football earlier this year aged 29 after comparing life at the top level to constantly going around a washing machine. He tweeted on Monday: “From the managers and players, we have shared our concerns for many years now that there are too many games, the schedule is overcrowded, and it’s at a dangerous level for players’ physical and mental well-being. “Despite our previous feedbacks, they have now recommended for next season: longer games, more intensity, and less emotions to be shown by players. “We just want to be in good condition on the pitch to give 100 per cent to our club and fans. Why are our opinions not being heard?” FIFA found an average of 10 minutes and 11 seconds were added to matches at the Qatar World Cup, an increase on the 2018 finals in Russia, but it also found effective playing time increased by over four minutes. It also found that as players became used to the new approach, the time added on dropped. Eleven minutes and six seconds were added on average at the group stage in Qatar, but dropped as low as seven minutes and 15 seconds in the last 16. The Community Shield lasted 105 minutes and 45 seconds, much longer than last season’s average Premier League game which was 98 minutes and 31 seconds. Three-time major winner Jordan Spieth has confirmed he and fellow golfer Justin Thomas are now minority stakeholders in Leeds. The two friends were expected to be joined by another fellow professional Rickie Fowler but he pulled out of a deal when the club were relegated from the Premier League in May. Spieth and Thomas have got on board with 49ers Enterprises, an American investment group which also owns the San Francisco 49ers NFL franchise, who took charge of the club after agreeing a deal to buy out chairman Andrea Radrizzani’s controlling stake. “Relegation wasn’t ideal but then we got involved with the 49ers group who were purchasing a larger share in Leeds United to do the stuff they do so successfully everywhere else they have touched and thought it would be a really cool opportunity,” Spieth told Sky Sports. “It’s done. Myself and Justin (Thomas) we’re involved in a very minority stake but within the bigger 49ers organisation. “They (the 49ers) renegotiated (after relegation) and then we got to decide whether we do it or not. “We always wanted to do it and it ended up possibly a better deal, as long as they can get promoted (to Premier League) soon.” Asked about Fowler’s involvement, Spieth added: “I don’t think so.
