Eddie Howe admits last season’s battles with Liverpool remain vivid memories
Eddie Howe will send his Newcastle side into battle with Liverpool still haunted by the memories of their encounters last season. The Reds were the only club to complete a Premier League double over the Magpies, although they gained a measure of revenge when they went on to finish fourth – one place and four points better off than Jurgen Klopp’s men. However, Howe admits it does not take much to stoke memories of the Fabio Carvalho winner in the eighth minute of stoppage time which handed Liverpool victory at Anfield last August, or the red card in a 2-0 defeat in the reverse fixture which cost goalkeeper Nick Pope his place in the Carabao Cup final. Howe said: “I move on quickly from the game in the sense that then you have to prepare the next one, but I think the emotion of the game and the feeling and the memories of the game, they stay with you for some time. “The memories of last year’s games, they’re with me. I can visualise certain moments, but then you have to detach yourself from that and go, ‘right, how do we prepare this one?’, because whether it’s tactical or whatever the thing is that you think you can do better, it’s about then delivering that to the best of your ability. “There’s a lot of defeats in my management career that are still there and they just need probably the emotions stoking and they’ll come back to the forefront of my brain.” Newcastle’s resurgence, fuelled in large part by the wealth of their Saudi-backed owners, has seen them re-establish a rivalry with Liverpool which sparked a series of memorable encounters in the 1990s. Klopp has on more than one occasion taken aim at the Magpies, and the two coaching teams have at times enjoyed a frosty relationship on the touchline. However, Howe expressed surprise at the perception there is added needle between the two camps when they go head-to-head. Asked why he believed the rivalry had become so intense in recent seasons, he replied: “I don’t know. Has it? There will be moments and flash-points because they are two iconic clubs going against each other. Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe “Genuinely, I think the rivalry between Newcastle and Liverpool has always been there, historically. I don’t think it’s been ramped up particularly any more than it’s always been. “When the game’s been on historically over a number of years, it’s a game everyone will go, ‘I want to watch that, I want to see what’s going to happen’. “There will be moments and flashpoints because they are two iconic clubs going against each other. I don’t think it’s necessarily ramped up in the last two years.” Read More Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide Ukraine war’s heaviest fight rages in east - follow live Juanma Lillo says Man City ‘well managed’ as he fills in for Pep Guardiola On this day in 2014: Man Utd break British record to sign Angel Di Maria Daniel Dubois aiming to ‘bully and shake up’ Oleksandr Usyk in title showdown

Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg could have cage fight in Roman Colosseum
Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg’s promised cage fight could take place in Rome’s Colosseum. Mr Musk suggested that the mixed martial arts bout could happen in the historic arena, which long ago served as the home of gladiatorial contests. Now it could see the two billionaires face off in a battle that could see the two revive some of that history, according to Mr Musk. He tweeted that there was “some chance” that the fight happened in the Colosseum, joking that he would need to work on his endurance as he shared a clip from The Life of Brian. The minister of culture has reached out to Mr Zuckerberg to propose the location, TMZ reported. Both the billionaires are said to be intrigued by the idea, the site said. That request was passed on to Dana White, the head of the UFC who has expressed an interest in co-ordinating the fight. The three have been negotiating about the details of the fight daily, TMZ reported. It is not clear where in the Colosseum the fight could actually take place. While it could once hold tens of thousands of people, it can no longer host more than a few hundred people inside special temporary seating, and it has hosted few large events in recent times. The fight between the two billionaires originally appeared to begin as something of a joke, after rumours that Mr Zuckerberg was looking for a competitor and Mr Musk tweeted that he was “up for a cage match”. Mr Zuckerberg replied to that tweet in a post with the caption “send me location”, and the fight appears to now be moving forward. That has led to much speculation over how the two men would fight, and suggestions that it would be the biggest face-off in history. The details of any such event are far from agreed – but that has not stopped speculation about who would actually win such a battle. Leigh Wood vs Josh Warrington live stream: How to watch fight online and on TV tonight
Leigh Wood and Josh Warrington will square off in a tantalising, all-British clash this weekend. Wood, 35, puts his WBA featherweight title on the line in the main event in Sheffield, as he looks to extend his second run with the belt. The Nottingham fighter lost the gold with a stoppage defeat by Mauricio Lara in February, but he avenged that loss in a rematch in May, beating the Mexican on points. Meanwhile, Warrington is looking for his third world-title reign, following two stints as IBF champion between 2018 and 2022. The Leeds fighter’s recent record is patchy, however. Like Wood, Warrington was stopped by Lara in his first fight with the Mexican in 2021, but he was unable to avenge that loss in the manner that “Leighthal” did, instead drawing with Lara in a rematch due to a clash of heads. Warrington, 32, did bounce back with a stoppage win over old rival Kiko Martinez, but he was then beaten by Luis Alberto Lopez in December. Here’s all you need to know about Saturday’s main event. White House event with NCAA basketball champions disrupted when player faints
Louisiana State University’s national champion women’s basketball team’s long-awaited visit to the White House was briefly disrupted when a player fainted as President Joe Biden was delivering remarks. As Mr Biden was speaking, the disruption caused by the incident became evident enough that the White House live feed of the event cut from a shot of the podium where Mr Biden was speaking to a wider shot showing the riser next to him where the players were standing. Several people were seen huddled over the stricken player, later identified as star forward Sa'Myah Smith, as Mr Biden was heard saying: “Folks, it’s OK,” and assuring attendees that Ms Smith was being attended to. Ms Smith was quickly attended to by several uniformed military personnel, and LSU coach Kim Mulvey later said the 6’2” Dallas, Texas native was “fine” but “kind of right now embarrassed”. The White House has a full-service medical clinic onsite staffed by military personnel attached to the White House Medical Unit. The LSU team’s visit, a traditional stop for collegiate athletic championship teams, came following a bit of controversy kicked up after first lady Jill Biden suggested that both LSU, the winners of the NCAA “March Madness” tournament and runners-up from the University of Iowa, could both be attended because of the high quality of play at this year’s championship game. The White House later retracted the remark and said only LSU would be invited, but some LSU players balked at the perceived slight before agreeing to attend.
