Women’s World Cup TV schedule: How to watch every match in UK
Women’s World Cup TV schedule: How to watch every match in UK
England travel to Australia and New Zealand as one of the favourites to win the Women’s World Cup, with Sarina Wiegman’s side looking to back up their victory in the European Championships last summer on home soil. The Lionesses were knocked out at the semi-final stage in both 2015 and 2019 having suffered defeat at the hands of Japan and the United States. The United States, who have won the tournament a record four times, will represent one of England’s main obstacles once again as they look to win the World Cup for a third successive time. Ireland will be making their debut appearance at the Women’s World Cup, while Germany, Spain, France and Sweden will all be contenders from Europe. With the tournament fast approaching, here is everything you need to know about how to watch the Women’s World Cup. When is the Women’s World Cup? The tournament will kick off on 20 July 2023 with the opening match between hosts New Zealand and Norway. Australia will kick off against Ireland later that day. The knockout stages begin on 5 August, with the World Cup final taking place in Sydney on 20 August. How can I watch the Women’s World Cup? TV rights have finally been agreed upon after a long-winded and public dispute between various European nations and FIFA. Gianni Infantino, the Fifa president, threatened a media blackout for the continent’s biggest football nations (UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain) but that was avoided after a deal was struck in mid-June. For UK viewers, every game will be available to watch on the BBC and ITV. For the BBC, there will be live coverage on television as well as the BBC Sport website with live audio commentary available on BBC Radio 5 Live, 5 Sports Extra and the BBC Sounds app. For ITV, live coverage will be available on television as well as online via ITVX. At present, the BBC and ITV have only announced the schedule for the group stages, although the BBC have said they will broadcast both semi-finals with the final available on both channels. When can I watch England? England play their first match of the World Cup against Haiti in Group D on 22 July. The game starts at 10:30am BST and will be shown on ITV. On 28 July, England play Denmark with kick-off at 9:30am BST and the game broadcast on the BBC. England’s final group-stage fixture is against China on Tuesday 1 August and will be shown on ITV with the match starting at 12pm BST. Should England make it through to the round of 16, their fixture will be shown live on the BBC. Barrow demand life bans after alleged racist abuse during Morecambe win
Barrow have called for life bans after an alleged incident of racist abuse during Tuesday’s win over Morecambe. Dom Telford’s first-half goal settled the match but the main issue occurred off the pitch and was addressed by both clubs after the final whistle. A statement on Barrow’s website read: “We are aware of an allegation of racist abuse being directed at a Barrow AFC staff member during Tuesday evening’s League Two fixture at The So Legal Stadium. “The club would like to make it absolutely clear that we abhor discrimination in all its forms and will take the strongest action possible, including pursuing life bans, for anyone found guilty of racism. “We will be conducting a thorough investigation and would appeal to any fans who may have witnessed any discriminatory abuse to please come forward. We would like to thank Barrow AFC stewards and Barrow police for their swift actions in identifying the individual.” Morecambe added: “We are aware of an incident that has taken place at this evening’s match with Barrow. “Until full details and understanding of the incident have been made clear, the club will not be making any further comment at this time. Morecambe FC stands against all forms of discrimination.” The PA news agency has contacted Cumbria Police for comment. Sunak missed World Cup final because he has ‘huge amount of work to do’, minister says
Rishi Sunak would have “loved to” have watched the Lionesses in the Word Cup final but has “a huge amount of work to do”, a minister has said. Claire Couthinho claimed the prime minister would also not have flown to the World Cup final if the men’s team were playing because he is “so busy”. Asked whether the PM would have made the trip to Sydney, Australia if Gareth Southgate’s team were in the final two, the children’s minister said she did “not think he would have”. “But I do know how proud he is of the Lionesses like we all are, it’s such a tremendous achievement, it was absolutely just brilliant to see,” she told Sky News. Defending Mr Sunak over claims he was paying lip service to the women’s game by not attending, Ms Couthinho said: “The foreign secretary was there and the culture secretary was also there. “This government was represented. And I know that the prime minister would have loved to have been there but he’s also got a huge amount of work to do. “And I think the travel time is probably difficult. But I know how proud he is of the Lionesses. “We all are. It’s an amazing achievement to get to a World Cup final. It’s absolutely extraordinary.” It came as World Cup legend Sir Geoff Hurst said a member of the royal family “should definitely” have attended the final. Asked if a member of the royal family not attending was a mistake, he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Yes, I do. I think if the royals attend the men’s game, they should definitely. “It’s an English team, a World Cup tournament, a member of the royal family should definitely have gone. “No argument at all about that.” Mr Sunak and the Prince of Wales faced a significant backlash over their decision not to attend the World Cup final in Australia, when England lost 1-0 to Spain. Critics argued the pay would travel to the game if the men’s team reached a World Cup final. Ms Coutinho went on to tell LBC that Mr Sunak is a “huge football fan” and a “big” fan of Southampton. “And he’s got two daughters. And he’s been so excited about the Lionesses,” she said. Asked which football team the PM supports, Ms Coutinho said: “The Southampton team. Is that the Saints? Yeah, he is a big Saints fan.” William and the Princess of Wales, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis watched the game together at their Anmer Hall country home in Sandringham, Norfolk. On this day in 2014: Luis Suarez bites Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini at World Cup
Luis Suarez overshadowed his Uruguay team’s stunning World Cup victory over Italy when he bit defender Giorgio Chiellini on this day in 2014. The incident took place in the final group game between the sides as Diego Godin headed a late goal to secure a 1-0 win for the South Americans to progress at the expense of the 2006 world champions. Suarez then fell to the floor holding his mouth and Chiellini protested the Uruguayan forward had dived. Chiellini told Italian television station Rai TV afterwards: “It was ridiculous not to send Suarez off. It is clear, clear-cut. “Then there was the obvious dive afterwards because he knew very well that he did something that he shouldn’t have done.” The then-Liverpool striker had already served a 10-game Premier League ban that season for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic during a league game at Anfield in April 2013. In 2010 whilst playing for Ajax he had been suspended for seven games after a similar offence committed against PSV Eindhoven’s Otman Bakkal. He was subsequently punished by FIFA for the bite on Chiellini, receiving a four-month suspension from all football and handed a nine-game international ban, as well as being fined 100,000 Swiss francs. Uruguay were knocked out at the last-16 stage after being beaten 2-0 by Colombia. Suarez returned to football by making his Barcelona debut in an El Clasico clash in October that year following a £65million move to the Nou Camp from Liverpool. England waiting to discover where Ukraine Euro 2024 qualifier will be hosted
England waiting to discover where Ukraine Euro 2024 qualifier will be hosted
England are still waiting to find out where September’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine will be hosted, the PA news agency understands. Gareth Southgate’s men continued their 100 per cent start to European Championship qualification by beating North Macedonia 7-0 on Monday. England’s next Group C match is away to Ukraine on September 9, but a location for the fixture has yet to be rubber-stamped. Russia’s invasion in February 2022 has forced Ukraine to host matches away from their homeland. Monday’s qualifier at home to Malta was played in Trnava, Slovakia and last year’s Nations League games were held in Poland – two in Lodz, one in Krakow. Austria had been considered as host for Ukraine’s qualifier against England, but PA understands the fixture is now unlikely to take place there. Vienna and Klagenfurt had been reportedly considered as host cities. UEFA has been contacted for comment.
