The 21-year-old England international is searching for a new team after it was mutually agreed he would leave Manchester United on Monday following a six-month internal investigation into his conduct. But reacting to a headline which claimed Gerrard was considering a move for Greenwood, the former England midfielder and now manager at Al-Ettifaq said simply on his Instagram story: “Fake news.” Both the BBC and Telegraph cite senior sources at the Saudi Pro League who indicate the serious nature of the allegations involving Greenwood are likely to preclude one of their clubs from signing him. Greenwood was suspended by United in January 2022 over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online. Charges including attempted rape and assault were discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service in February this year but reports he was set to be retained by United were met with a public outcry. United’s handling of the case was described as “pretty horrible” by their former captain Gary Neville, who accused his former employers of lacking leadership and dragging out the inquiry. Greenwood said in a statement on Monday he “did not do the things I was accused of” but added he had “made mistakes in my relationship, and I take my share of responsibility for the situations which led to the social media post”. United said in their statement: “All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United.” The PA news agency understands the club are working with Greenwood’s family to find the right environment for him to continue his career, with discussions under way to find the correct solution. Spanish state prosecutors have accused Luis Rubiales of sexual assault and coercion, for kissing a player on the lips without her consent after the Women’s World Cup final. Rubiales, the now-suspended president of the Spanish soccer federation, kissed Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the awards ceremony after Spain beat England to win the title on 20 August in Sydney, Australia. Prosecutors presented a case against Rubiales to Spain’s National Court in Madrid two days after Hermoso formally accused him of sexual assault. According to a sexual consent law passed last year, Rubiales could face a fine or a prison sentence of one to four years if found guilty of sexual assault. The new law eliminated the difference between “sexual harassment” and “sexual assault,” sanctioning any unconsented sexual act. Prosecutors added Friday that Rubiales could have committed an act of coercion when, according to Hermoso, he pressured her to speak out in his defense immediately after the scandal erupted regarding his behavior. Rubiales has insisted the kiss was consensual. Hermoso has denied that in statements issued by her and her players’ union. Prosecutors have asked the judge that Rubiales appear before a court to give preliminary testimony. If the National Court judge agrees the hear the case, it would lead to a formal court investigation that will end with a recommendation for the case to either be dismissed or go to trial. Hermoso, a 33-year-old forward, now plays for Mexican club Pachuca after a long career with top Spanish and European clubs, including Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid. She returned to her Mexican club on Thursday. The 46-year-old Rubiales faces threats other than a possible criminal trial. He was suspended from his post by Fifa on 27 August, a day after he refused to step down when he delivered a defiant speech to the general assembly of his federation in which he said he was victim of a “witch hunt” by “false feminists.” Rubiales was banned from his post for 90 days while Fifa disciplinary judges consider his case. Soccer’s governing body can impose sanctions on individuals ranging from warnings and fines to suspensions from the sport. Rubiales also faces action from the Spanish government. A government legal panel overseeing sports has opened a probe to determine if he abused his authority by kissing Hermoso or tainted the image of Spain with his conduct. He faces being deemed unfit to hold his post for up to two years. Rubiales’ behavior at the final, which included a lewd crotch grab while next to dignitaries including Spain’s queen and teenage princess, combined with his speech have tarnished the Women’s World Cup title and damaged his own federation. Spain’s women’s players have said they won’t play again for their nation until big changes are made in the federation. The federation fired coach Jorge Vilda, but the players have yet to say if they consider that sufficient. Luke Shaw has been ruled out for several weeks in an injury blow to Manchester United and England. United are still waiting to assess the severity of the left-back’s muscle problem but he is certain to miss next season Sunday’s pivotal clash away at Arsenal and this weekend’s home game against Nottingham Forest. Shaw could also sit out the start of United’s Champions League campaign as well as an Old Trafford meeting with early season leaders Brighton. With his deputy Tyrell Malacia also injured, it means manager Erik ten Hag does not have a senior specialist left-back, with right-back Diogo Dalot perhaps the likeliest candidate to slot in as United look for their first win of the season. Ten Hag has lost a second England international this week, with Mason Mount also out with a hamstring strain he sustained in Saturday’s defeat to Tottenham. England manager Gareth Southgate will probably have to be without Shaw, and perhaps Mount, for the September games against Ukraine and Scotland. Shaw represents another defensive concern for Southgate for the two matches, with Reece James and Tyrone Mings definitely out and John Stones a doubt.
