On this day in 2015: Jamie Vardy scores in 11th game in a row
Jamie Vardy scored for the 11th match in a row on this day in 2015 to break Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Premier League record and earn Leicester a 1-1 draw with Manchester United. The England forward opened the scoring against Manchester United in the 24th minute to surpass Van Nistelrooy’s 10-game mark, which had stood since 2003. Vardy found his 14th goal of the season when he got on the end of Christian Fuchs’ pass and rifled past David De Gea from close range and become the first player to score in 11 consecutive games in the Premier League era. Manchester United managed to find an equaliser when Bastian Schweinsteiger cancelled out Vardy’s opener with a powerful header from close range to make it 1-1. The 28-year-old started the run of consecutive games with a late penalty in a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth three months earlier in August which included doubles against Arsenal and Southampton, a winner against Watford and the record-equalling strike in a 3-0 win at Newcastle the week before. Vardy’s incredible run came after he was made an England international in June, just three years after becoming non-league football’s first £1million player following a move to the King Power Stadium from Fleetwood in 2012. After breaking the record, Vardy said: “It’s unbelievable. I think I got a bit carried away with myself. “Obviously we’ve got a lot of pace in the team and I think counter-attacking is a big advantage for us. “If we can break as quick we have, then obviously it is going to benefit the team.” Vardy’s goals helped power the Foxes to the Premier League crown under Claudio Ranieri and he finished the season as the league’s second top scorer behind Golden Boot winner Sergio Aguero. No player has yet to break Vardy’s record which still stands and he went on to win more silverware with Leicester, lifting the FA Cup trophy in 2021 before being relegated with the club in 2023. Diogo Dalot happy to continue ‘special journey’ after signing new Man Utd deal
Diogo Dalot happy to continue ‘special journey’ after signing new Man Utd deal
Diogo Dalot says everyone at Manchester United feels like they are “at the start of a special journey” after signing a new deal until at least 2028. The 24-year-old right-back joined from Porto in 2018 and has gone on to make 107 appearances in all competitions for the club. Dalot, who spent the 2020-21 season on loan at AC Milan, has now signed new terms at Old Trafford for the next five years, with the option of a further season. “Playing for Manchester United is one of the highest honours that you can have in football,” the 11-cap Portugal international said. “We have shared some fantastic moments over the past five years and I’ve grown so much and my passion for this incredible club has only increased since the day that I joined. “As a group of players, we all feel like we are at the start of a special journey right now. “I can assure you that I will dedicate myself relentlessly to helping this group to achieve our aims and make the fans proud of this team. “That drive continues this week with everyone intensely focused on preparations for the FA Cup final.” Dalot began the season superbly under Erik ten Hag, but much-improved Aaron Wan-Bissaka may get the nod to start Saturday’s FA Cup final at right-back. Irrespective of his role against Manchester City this weekend, United football director John Murtough is delighted by the strides the full-back has made. “Diogo is an excellent defender, with a great combination of pace, strength and versatility,” he said. “He has consistently developed, improving year-on-year since joining the club in 2018. “Diogo’s work ethic and professionalism is superb; the way in which he prepares himself every day in order to perform at his highest level is exactly what we all want from a Manchester United player. “Diogo has a strong mentality, high standards and a great personality, and we are delighted that he will remain an important member of the squad for the coming years.”

Arsenal fans react to 'worst kit ever' as club unveil new away strip
Arsenal fans react to 'worst kit ever' as club unveil new away strip
Ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League season, Arsenal football club has unveiled its new away kit and the fan feedback is not great. This morning, Arsenal fans got a preview of the kit that new signings such as Declan Rice will be seen wearing in the upcoming season’s away fixtures. In images posted across the club’s social media, the Adidas-manufactured kit is a bright highlighter-yellow with black dots and thick black lines going across it. According to Arsenal, the lines across the kit are, “Inspired by the map of Islington” where the team’s stadium is based. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The text on the shirt, including the Arsenal logo, is a light blue colour, while the shorts appear to be black with three yellow stripes down the side. In a video produced to coincide with the release, players like Saka, Odegaard and Martinelli feature wearing the shirt, while other celebrity Arsenal fans such as Mabel, Asa Butterfield, Martin Kemp and Ashley Walters all make cameo appearances. But, it seems many fans just can’t get on board with the eccentric design of the kit. One fan reasoned: “Adidas were overdue a miss. Let’s leave it at that.” Another said: “I’m trying my absolute hardest to convince myself that I like it but it’s simply not possible.” Someone else joked: “Have flashbacks to the contours session in my GCSE geography class.” “That Arsenal away kit is undoubtedly the worst kit I’ve ever seen in my lifetime without exaggeration,” wrote another. Another wrote in despair: "First time back in the Champions League for years and this is how they’re doing us." Have your say in our news democracy.
