On this day in 2020: Liverpool sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich
Liverpool signed Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara from European champions Bayern Munich on this day in 2020. The Spain international was in the last year of his deal with the Bundesliga club and arrived at Anfield for an initial fee of £20million. Thiago’s signing had been anticipated by supporters for some time and he went straight into the squad to face Chelsea, playing 45 minutes in a 2-0 win. Thiago told the club’s website: “I think it’s an amazing feeling. “I was waiting for this moment for a long time and I am very, very happy to be here. “When the years are passing, you are trying to win as much as you can – and when you win, you want to win more. “I think this club describes what I am as well. I want to achieve all of the goals, win as many trophies as possible. “It also (has) this kind of family (feeling) that I need because we (like to) have a very close relationship with the club and I think I will feel this, I will have this feeling, with this club as well.” Thiago, who played in Liverpool’s FA Cup final success in 2022, has made 97 appearances in his injury-hit three years at Anfield. Micah Richards labels Man City’s performance ‘very disappointing’ after draw with Liverpool
Micah Richards labels Man City’s performance ‘very disappointing’ after draw with Liverpool
Micah Richard’s labelled Manchester City’s performance against Liverpool ‘very disappointing’ after the Premier League champions let a one goal lead slip at the Etihad Stadium and had to settle of a share of the points in Saturday’s early kick off. City started the match on the front foot with Nathan Ake bringing a scuffed clearance from Alisson under control before driving past Trent Alexander-Arnold and slipping a fine pass into the box for Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker brought up his 50th Premier League goal with a quick touch and spin before slotting the ball past Alisson. The hosts had a second goal disallowed after Manuel Akanji was judged to have fouled Alisson before Ruben Dias tapped home from close range but City never fully took control of the game. Alexander-Arnold finished off a fine move in the 80th minute to equalise for the Reds and earn them a well-earned point. “I think City will be frustrated,” said Richards on Sky Sports after the match, “After Haaland scored that goal, you’re thinking can they kick on and go up a gear but that never happened. “Man City will be disappointed that they couldn’t go up another gear. Very disappointing.” Fellow Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool striker, Daniel Sturridge, agreed adding that Liverpool will be ‘delighted’ with securing a point against the league leaders. “[Liverpool] will be delighted with the result to be honest,” he said, “I thought that Manchester City were very good today but Liverpool continued to press on. In the second half they changed their mentality and there was an emphasis on pressing.” Jamie Carragher, meanwhile, believed that neither side did enough to win and claimed Liverpool were fortunate to secure a point following a couple of mistakes from their goalkeeper. He said: “They would have lost [the match] last year. We saw the performance [from Liverpool] last season and there’s no doubt that something is building. “I think both teams still lacked something, maybe on the back of the international break, it didn’t feel like either team really deserved to win the game. “Alisson didn’t have his best game on the ball today and could have cost Liverpool a couple of times with his clearances.” The 1-1 draw means Pep Guardiola’s side stay top of the table and lead Liverpool by a point. Erik ten Hag backs Jadon Sancho to build on progress at Manchester United
Erik ten Hag backs Jadon Sancho to build on progress at Manchester United
Erik ten Hag says Jadon Sancho’s progress and potential is one of the reasons Manchester United have a “good base” to kick on from next season. The 23-year-old arrived at Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 in a £73million deal following a prolonged pursuit. Sancho has shown flashes of his outstanding talent but has yet to fully live up to the billing, with the United winger falling out of the England reckoning as a result. Ten Hag has worked carefully with Sancho, who went on an individual winter fitness programme in the Netherlands rather than travel to the squad’s World Cup camp in Spain. Back then the patient United boss said the player was “not in the right status or fitness state”, but he has since made strides and the Dutchman expects even more from him. “He did very well on the right side and I think he played a very good game,” Ten Hag said after Thursday’s 4-1 defeat of Chelsea. “I think Jadon Sancho is one of the players who made progress in the season and there were many players in our squad who made good progress. I think it’s a good base to build further on.” Asked if he preferred Sancho on the right or left, Ten Hag said: “He can do both. “I think he prefers to play on the left, but we have seen today he is very good on the right as well.” United’s win against Chelsea sealed qualification for next season’s Champions League with a game to spare. Ten Hag immediately underlined that summer signings are needed, but also stressed there is far more to come from the likes of Sancho. “Still, we can also improve with this squad, as we did this season,” the United boss said. “I said (signings) is one part of it. The other thing is progress in the current squad and the current players. “That is the job that I have to do, in togetherness with that squad and with my coaching staff. “As (of) now, I think we make huge progress during the season. The team, many individuals play a fantastic, great season. “Now we have a good base but, as I just mentioned, I think there is still a lot of room for improvement also in this squad. “But then when you get the right players in, that will help and even give you more depth and a better standard and level. “Then you have more chance to be in the top four and then it gives you more chance to win titles and trophies.” United have already won the Carabao Cup this season and return to Wembley to face Manchester City in a mouth-watering FA Cup final on June 3. But first comes the Premier League season finale against Fulham – the last home match before long-serving David De Gea’s contract expires. Both parties have spoken positively about agreeing new terms but talks have dragged on, although Ten Hag downplayed the suggestion Sunday could be the goalkeeper’s last Old Trafford appearance. “I think we want him to stay and he wants to stay, so I think we will find each other,” he said of the Premier League Golden Glove winner, who joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2011. “I never will give a comment about that, about how negotiations are going.” Read More Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide Ukraine war’s heaviest fight rages in east - follow live Jonny Hill urges Sale to seize the moment in Premiership final against Saracens Man City claim title for third successive time – The 2022-23 season in pictures From Conte and Tuchel’s clash to Kane’s heroics – Premier League best moments
