Conor McGregor makes guarantee for Michael Chandler fight
Conor McGregor has insisted that he will fight Michael Chandler before the end of the year, amid fan concerns that the UFC clash will not take place at all. It was announced in early February that McGregor and Chandler would serve as opposing coaches on the new season of The Ultimate Fighter, which airs between 30 May and 15 August, before fighting each other. However, no date, location or weight class has been confirmed for the bout. McGregor is also absent from the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s testing pool. Fighters must be in the pool for six months and return two negative tests (and zero positives) in order to compete in the UFC. As a result, McGregor must enter the pool imminently if he is to fight before the end of 2022. “That’s done, man,” Conor McGregor claimed in an interview with the Daily Mirror at the weekend. “That’s done. I’m ready. “By year-end, I’m back in that cage, having competed. I’m gearing up now, ready to go. “The fight’s signed now. It’ll be announced during The Ultimate Fighter. So, The Ultimate Fighter is airing in a few days on ESPN; by the time that show finishes, we’ll have a date and everything set for the fans.” Irishman McGregor, 34, has not fought since July 2021, when he suffered a broken leg in a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier. Meanwhile, Chandler also lost to Poirier in his most recent bout, having been submitted by his fellow American in November. Last week, the second documentary covering McGregor’s career was released on Netflix. McGregor Forever covers the former dual-weight champion’s fights with Khabib Nurmagomedov and Donald Cerrone, his back-to-back losses to Poirier in 2021, and his recovery from his broken leg. Millie Bright: England women’s football captain in profile
With the Lionesses’ Euro 2022-winning captain Leah Williamson forced to miss out on the World Cup through injury, coach Sarina Wiegman has entrusted the responsibility for leading the team to experienced Chelsea centre back Millie Bright. Bright has been passed fit for England’s match against Haiti after recovering from knee surgery and the defender will lead the Lionesses in their Group D opener. Now 29, Bright grew up in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, overcoming infant pneumonia and asthma to enjoy a career as a top level athlete, although her first love was equestrianism, not football. Women’s World Cup LIVE: Latest updates as England face Haiti Showing early promise when she did take to the field aged nine, she was soon scouted playing for Killamarsh Dynamos by Sheffield United and joined their academy before moving to Doncaster Rovers Belles aged 16 in 2009. Making her debut that same year and scoring on her first start, Bright spent a year on loan at Leeds Ladies before establishing herself at Doncaster, where she played with future Lionesses Mary Earps and Bethany England. In December 2014, she signed for Chelsea and has remained with the West London club ever since, picking up four Barclays Women’s Super League titles, three FA Women’s Cups and reaching the UEFA Champions League Final, scoring 14 times across 218 appearances. For England, she was an essential part of the side that reached the semi-finals of the last FIFA World Cup in France in 2019 and of last summer’s triumphant Euros team. She has represented her country, to date, 66 times and scored five international goals, striking up solid defensive partnerships with Williamson and Houghton during that time and posing a significant aerial threat from set plays. Newcastle United ridiculed over hosting Saudi Arabia friendlies
Newcastle United have announced that they will host the Saudi Arabia football team for two games during September - a move which has been met with widespread criticism. Newcastle United's fabled St James' Park ground will be the 'home' stadium for the Green Falcons as they take on Costa Rica on September 8th before facing South Korea on 12th September. The Magpies' majority investors happen to be the Public Investment Fund (PIF) that manages a gargantuan pile of Saudi wealth through various high-profile investments, including Newcastle United. After the Premier League granted permission for PIF to takeover Newcastle United from Mike Ashley in 2021, the league was given 'legally-binding assurances' that the PIF was separate from the Saudi state, despite the PIF arguing in court (in an unrelated case) that they were, in fact, a "sovereign instrumentality of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia." And with Saudi Arabia visiting Newcastle for their international friendlies, it has resurfaced discussions over the PIF and Saudi state linkup. A mixed reaction followed Newcastle's announcement - with plenty pouring on their disdain: A few others supported the move - proudly mentioning 'state ownership' of the club. If the Saudi team manages to forget their kit - they'll be able to borrow Newcastle United's ringer - a green strip which uses colours very close to that of Saudi Arabia.
