Gary Neville and Jill Scott swapped social media accounts for a week to see what would happen and the results were depressing. The football icons teamed up to take part in 'The Social Swap,' a Heineken campaign to highlight the issue of gender bias on X/Twitter in April and they swapped accounts for five days, continuing to share opinions on football as they normally would on UEFA Champions League matches. But unbeknown to Twitter users, for that short time, a message directed at Neville was in fact to Scott, and vice versa. One response Neville got when people thought he was Scott was: "You should probably concentrate on the girls' league." "Save your opinion for what to make for dinner," another comment said. Scott, when people thought she was Neville, on the other hand, received comments such as: "The most objective opinion I've seen from you." “I’ve seen some of the replies that have come into Jill, which were my tweets,” Neville told the Guardian. “‘Get back in the kitchen’, ‘Stick to the game you know, love’, that type of condescending, ignorant tweet … there’s no doubt that in football, women who have an opinion on men’s football basically get told to go back in their box.” Neville added the issue of equality for women’s sport has been important to him since he was a child when his mum got banned from playing football for the boys’ team in the 70s. He now watched football with his children. "The idea they can’t have an opinion on football without having their gender referred to is ridiculous,” he said. Meanwhile, Scott has experienced sexism throughout her life. “I don’t want to tell a sob story, but I remember my first day at senior school, which is daunting anyway,” Scott said. “A lot of people knew I played football. "One boy said: ‘You can’t play football, you’re a girl.’ And I stuck up for myself and chased after him. He tripped me up and I ended up in hospital with a fractured elbow. When I look back at stuff like that, that was just because I played football. I saw him in the pub recently and he came to say well done on winning the Euros … I nearly broke his elbow.” She added: “It’s moments like that where I think it has been tough and, without knowing it, from a young age I started building resilience against that,” Scott says. “Sometimes with resilience we then think we just have to take things and take comments. But I think now if girls go to school and a boy says: ‘Women’s football is crap,’ they’ll be like: ‘Well, we did win the Euros.’ They’ve got a bit of fighting talk behind them.” Scott believes "there has been a big change” in attitudes to women's sport since England won the Euros in 2022. “But we had to go out and do the unthinkable just to get a bit of respect for women’s football," she added. "Fortunately enough we did do it [win the Euros]. Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha and rapper Stormzy are set to become joint owners of non-League club AFC Croydon. The pair are part of a three-man consortium, along with former Palace head of player care Danny Young, that has agreed a deal to acquire the assets of the south London side, who play in the Combined Counties Football League Premier South Division – the ninth tier of English football. Croydon announced contracts had been exchanged with the existing ownership and the consortium “will own, operate and develop their childhood hometown football club”. A statement added: “Whilst completion is subject to legislative and governance procedures, the three consortium members are excited about developing a community asset in the borough that gave them their own opportunities. “They hope to take the entire community on this exciting journey with them.” Zaha, 30, was born in Ivory Coast but raised in the borough of Croydon. He is already involved in community projects in the area through his own charitable foundation and an Academy. Zaha tweeted: “May the journey begin.” The latest announcement comes at a time of uncertainty of over Zaha’s playing future, with his Palace contract set to expire at the end of this month. The player has been offered a new deal at Selhurst Park but is yet to commit and has been linked with other clubs in the Premier League, elsewhere in Europe and Saudi Arabia. Stormzy, 29, also hails from Croydon and has a long-standing friendship with Zaha.

Arsenal will play five Women’s Super League games at the Emirates Stadium next season and are committed to hosting all Champions League fixtures there should they qualify for the group stage. Jonas Eidevall’s side have played three WSL fixtures at the stadium this season, setting a new league attendance record when they beat neighbours Tottenham 4-0 before selling over 86,000 tickets across matches against Manchester United and Chelsea. Five of their Women’s Champions League games were also staged at the Emirates, including the semi-final second-leg sell-out against Wolfsburg, which saw the German side win in extra-time. Arsenal are in a tussle to qualify for next season’s Champions League but, if they do progress, every fixture from the group stage onwards will be hosted in N5 rather than at Meadow Park. Chelsea boss Emma Hayes says she does not intend to watch Sunday’s Manchester derby that could see her side crowned Women’s Super League champions. With two rounds of games to go, champions Chelsea are two points clear of second-placed Manchester United heading into their lunchtime kick-off at Kingsmeadow against Arsenal. Sarina Wiegman is confident England are ready for the task ahead of them as they prepare for Friday’s must-win Nations League clash with the Netherlands at Wembley. The Lionesses are third in Group A1 after four games, having been beaten 2-1 in September by the Dutch and 3-2 last month by Belgium, who they trail by three and one point respectively. Failure to beat the Netherlands in their penultimate group fixture will end their hopes of the first-placed finish they require to have a chance of securing a Paris 2024 Olympics qualifying spot for Great Britain, and boss Wiegman told a press conference: “I think the team is ready. “We’re really excited to play at Wembley tomorrow. I think the camp so far from Monday to now has gone really well. “We’re very clear on how we want to play and what we want to do; I see good things on and off pitch, and that gives me confidence that we’re really ready for tomorrow, and of course we all know what we have to do.” She added: “If you look at the games I don’t think we played really poor, just in moments we didn’t get it over the line and then we got some losses – which is not good, we want to do better. “In football, just as in life, you have ups and downs, and what we want to do is get to the high again, and that is what we are going to try to do.” With Millie Bright having withdrawn from the squad last week due to a knee injury, goalkeeper Mary Earps is set to captain the side. We are not in that situation right now. “ An experienced player Wiegman has back in the fold is Beth Mead, the Golden Boot winner when England won the Euros in 2022 who, having missed their run to the World Cup final during the summer, has been recalled after recovering from an ACL injury. Wiegman said it was as if Mead “hasn’t been away” without confirming whether she would start or not on Friday. Mead has 50 caps – a landmark fellow forward Lauren Hemp will reach if she plays a part against the Dutch. And the 23-year-old said: “It would be a surreal feeling. To do it at Wembley – there’s no better place. It would be an incredible feeling. “Looking back, a lot of the big games I’ve had have come at Wembley. There’s a lot at stake (on Friday). We know as a group what’s expected of us. I feel like when we’re put under pressure, a lot of the time, we do the job. “I’ve been to an Olympics before so I’ve experienced it once. I want to experience it again.” After Friday’s contest against Wiegman’s former side, England conclude their group games by playing Scotland at Hampden Park next Tuesday.
