Daniel Ricciardo returns to F1 as he replaces Nyck de Vries
Daniel Ricciardo will make a sensational return to the F1 track at the Hungarian Grand Prix later this month after signing a short-term loan deal with AlphaTauri, and will replace Nyck de Vries for the rest of the current season. After parting ways with McLaren last year, Ricciardo returned to his old team Red Bull as a reserve driver, and Red Bull will now loan the Australian to AlphaTauri for the remainder of the 2023 campaign. De Vries has been dropped with immediate effect in the midst of a difficult season, as one of only two drivers on the grid who has failed to collect a single championship point. Thirty-four-year-old Ricciardo’s first race for AlphaTauri will be at the Hungaroring in Budapest next Sunday, 23 July. More follows... Old Megan Rapinoe autograph video has men raging about her all over again
Megan Rapinoe is facing the wrath of men on the internet again, this time over an old clip of her singing an autograph. Rapinoe has been in the news again recently after the USA crashed out of the Women’s World Cup on penalties. After the result, Donald Trump reignited his feud with the football icon after the defending champions suffered a shock loss to Sweden, marking the first time the USA have failed to make it to the semi-finals of the competition. Trump, who has hit out at Rapinoe on plenty of occasions in the past, took to Truth Social to criticise Rapinoe after the final result in an unhinged rant. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter She’s faced criticism from elsewhere too since the USA were kicked out of the tournament, and now people are returning to an old clip. The likes of Piers Morgan and tennis player Nick Kyrgios have posted the footage of Rapinoe signing a young boy’s football at the 2019 ESPY awards in Los Angeles. Rapinoe, who had just won the World Cup with the USA at the time, signs the ball and then hands it back to him without looking at the boy. Morgan posted the video with the caption: “Doesn’t even look at him. Diabolical arrogance.” Kyrgios replied: “Hahahahahaha one thing me and Piers agree on.” The clip was also posted by Oli London who wrote: “Imagine being such an arrogant Narcissist that you don’t even look at a young fan and acknowledge them when signing a ball. “This is Megan Rapinoe in a nut shell.” It comes after Trump hit out at Rapinoe by writing on Truth Social: “The 'shocking and totally unexpected' loss by the U.S. Women's Soccer Team to Sweden is fully emblematic of what is happening to our once great Nation under Crooked Joe Biden [sic]. “Many of our players were openly hostile to America - No other country behaved in such a manner, or even close.” He added: “WOKE EQUALS FAILURE. “Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!! Liverpool begin midfield overhaul by completing Alexis Mac Allister signing
Liverpool have completed the signing of World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton in the first step of Jurgen Klopp’s summer midfield overhaul. The Argentina international has signed a five-year contract at Anfield and is expected to be joined by further arrivals after the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Liverpool had to fight off interest from other clubs for Mac Allister and always intended to get some of their transfers done before pre-season, to give them more time to settle in. They believe the 24-year-old, who scored 10 Premier League goals as he helped Brighton to their highest-ever finish of sixth in the top flight, can occupy any of the three midfield positions in Klopp’s side. The midfielder told Liverpoolfc.com: “It feels amazing. It’s a dream come true, it’s amazing to be here and I can’t wait to get started. “I wanted to be in [from] the first day of pre-season, so it’s good that everything is done. I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates. “It was a fantastic year for me – World Cup, what we achieved with Brighton – but now it’s time to think about Liverpool and try to be a better player and a better human being every day. “Since I won the World Cup, I said that I want to win more trophies and I think that this club will help me to do that – that’s the aim and when you are in a big club like this one you have to win trophies. So, that’s what I want. “Since I arrived here, I can see how big this club is – the players we have, the staff, everyone. I’m really pleased and looking forward to playing for this club.” Liverpool had identified Mac Allister as a key target even before the World Cup, where he set up Angel Di Maria’s goal in the final against France, after first tracking him when he was still playing in South America. The deal was the last completed by outgoing director of football Julian Ward, with his successor Jorg Schamdtke now taking the lead in Liverpool’s transfer business, and was aided by the club’s long relationship with his agent Juan Gemelli, who was involved in Philippe Coutinho’s move to Anfield in 2013. Liverpool believe that Mac Allister, like Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk, had to fight his way to the top, rather than being fast-tracked, and have a history of successful signings of players aged between 23 and 25. Dan Burn’s dream comes true on a ‘special’ night for Newcastle
Dan Burn realised a dream he never imagined would come true when he scored in Newcastle’s Champions League triumph over Paris St Germain. The Magpies defender was earning £9 an hour collecting trolleys when he got his break in football as a 17-year-old YTS trainee with Darlington. On Wednesday night, his header put his side 2-0 ahead in their Group F clash with the French champions at St James’ Park, and they went on to secure a famous 4-1 victory to give themselves a genuine chance of qualification. Asked afterwards if he had ever dreamt of scoring in the Champions League, the 31-year-old said: “I dreamt of it. I never thought it was going to happen. “I don’t think it’s really sunk in. The next few days once I’ve watched it back about a hundred times and managed to celebrate with my family, it probably will. “But (it was) just a special night all round for the city.” Burn’s big moment, which came after Miguel Almiron had fired the home side in front, was surrounded by drama after he headed home Bruno Guimaraes’ cross and immediately saw the flag go up to spark a lengthy VAR check. To be able to say that I've scored in the Champions League for Newcastle is amazing Newcastle defender Dan Burn But the 6ft 6in defender eventually got the answer he craved to spark wild celebrations on and off the pitch. He said: “It spoiled it a little bit because as soon as I scored, I looked up and saw the offside flag and you’re a bit deflated. “But as it went longer and longer, you think it might be a goal and just to have the lads jumping on you and looking around, and I’ve got all my family here as well… “To be able to say that I’ve scored in the Champions League for Newcastle is amazing.” Much of the talk before the game centred on how a Newcastle defence shorn of the services of key man Sven Botman would handle the threat of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Goncalo Ramos and Randal Kolo Muani. In the event, Burn, Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar – who also got his name on the scoresheet – coped admirably to blunt a potentially lethal attack. Asked about Mbappe, Burn said with a smile: “He stayed on the left side, so I was quite happy, to be fair. But even to say I was playing against Mbappe is crazy. “As I said, he kept over to Tripps’ side more, so I was happy with him.” The Magpies will resume their campaign after the international break with another home tie against Borussia Dortmund, but will do so having made a significant statement about their prospects. Burn said: “We don’t fear anyone. We worked very, very hard to get to this point and we want to enjoy it, but we’ll only enjoy that playing the way that we play. “We’ve just got to keep the momentum going.” Read More Steven Davis remains confident in Rangers squad despite defeat to Limassol ‘Maverick’ Lucas Paqueta impresses David Moyes in West Ham’s Europa League win Roberto De Zerbi hails ‘incredible’ Brighton reaction to salvage Marseille draw Warren Gatland highlights hard work as Wales aim to continue progress Geoge Ford believes partnership with Owen Farrell is ready to deliver West Ham set European record with victory over Freiberg in Germany
