Man City’s Kyle Walker vows to make Champions League final after injury scare
Man City’s Kyle Walker vows to make Champions League final after injury scare
Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker has played down fears he could miss the Champions League final with a back injury. The England international did not feature in an open training session on Tuesday as City continued preparations for Saturday’s clash with Inter Milan in Istanbul. The 33-year-old looked in discomfort as he was substituted in the final minute of City’s FA Cup final triumph over Manchester United at Wembley. But Walker was one of a number of players made available for media interviews later on Tuesday and he insisted the problem was not serious. “I’m fine, I’m just getting old,” he told Sky Sports News. “I’m completely fine, it’s just an extra day of recovery. “I’ve played a lot of minutes over the last number of weeks so the manager said, ‘Just stay inside and come Saturday you will be raring to go’. “I’m fine, the minutes that I’ve played when everyone else was injured, I was there digging my heels in and getting through it. I won’t be missing the Champions League final for anything.” Manager Pep Guardiola also said Walker’s absence from training was only precautionary. “He has had a disturbance in his back,” said Guardiola at a press conference. “Yesterday he was not good, today he was a little bit better but we didn’t want to take any risks. We will see what happens in the next days.” City are bidding to win the Champions League for the first time and complete a glorious treble after their Premier League and FA Cup successes this season. They are also looking to erase the memory of their painful loss to Chelsea in the 2021 final. As three-time winners, Inter boast the greater European pedigree but City will go into the match as firm favourites against the side that finished third in Serie A this term. Guardiola, however, insists what has happened in the past – and even current form – counts for little now. He said: “It’s really good to travel in a few days to Istanbul. We go together and it is a dream to be here. “Two years ago we were there but in different situations with Covid. For history, they are better than us but it is about what you have to do to be better than the opponent in 95 minutes Pep Guardiola “We’re going to try to do our best and we know the final is how you behave in that specific 95 minutes, not history. “For history, they are better than us but it is about what you have to do to be better than the opponent in 95 minutes. “It doesn’t count what you have done in the group stages or the Premier League or the FA Cup. We have to be better than them.” Guardiola is comfortable with the tag of favourites. “We are used to it,” he said. “Why should it be more dangerous? Accept the role and go out there knowing the quality of the opponents. We accept what people say, no problem.” City’s form in the latter part of the season, when they reeled in Arsenal to win the Premier League and powered past Bayern Munich and Real Madrid to reach this weekend’s showpiece, has been outstanding. Guardiola acknowledges confidence is high in the City squad but insists there will be no complacency. He said: “It is a final against a top team and we have to do it. We are confident, I’m so optimistic, but at the same time I cannot deny the quality of the opponent. “I have never done that and especially not in the final of the Champions League.” Read More Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide Ukraine war’s heaviest fight rages in east - follow live Merger of golf’s warring factions sends shockwaves through sport London Irish suspended as takeover deal collapses London Irish’s highs and lows as the club face suspension

Men are annoyed that Australia wants to make a statue for the Matildas
Men are annoyed that Australia wants to make a statue for the Matildas
Men are airing their annoyance at plans to make a bronze statue to celebrate the Matildas at the World Cup. The Matildas, who came fourth in the Women’s World Cup, were celebrated in Brisbane on Sunday and handed the Keys to the City by the Lord Mayor. During the celebrations, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk confirmed that a statue will be built in honour of the team. “We’re going to increase the legacy funding for women’s football including upgrades to major venues where football is played across Queensland,” Palaszczuk said. “But wait there’s one more thing. As a lasting tribute to 2023 Matildas we will build a statue at Suncorp Stadium. “There are plenty (of statues) there, celebrating our male sporting champions, it’s time we celebrated women as well… you deserve your place amongst the greatest.” British TV host Piers Morgan was one of the first to complain about the announcement, retweeting the news writing: “A statute for coming 4th? Is this a joke?” Sky News Australia host Laura Jays responded to Morgan, offering to explain what the team means to Australia. “Long lunch and I’ll explain the Matildas effect,” Jays said. “Half the country watched the match. This is a country that is dominated by men’s AFL and NRL.” “It’s a big deal. And the start of something very big for women’s sport.” However, she failed to get Morgan to consider her, and millions of Matildas’ fans perspective, simply replying to Jays with: “Never had you down as a participation prize fan.” Many also disagreed with Morgan in the comments, sharing how ‘proud’ they are of the Matildas, and that they had united the country. However, it seems Morgan isn’t the only man frustrated the idea of the statue writing. Former Australian NBA star Andrew Bogut wrote on Twitter: “Matildas did well… Statue? No. A Gold/First Place is a statue and over the top celebration worthy achievement,” he wrote. Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios shared his opinion about the news: “Agree. Great effort! Statue for fourth is nuts but they had us all on the edge of our seats! Next time.” Morgan later doubled-down on his comments, responding to some on Twitter by saying, “mate, no offence but the Matildas got beaten by England, and even lost the 3rd/4th play-off.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali banned for 10 months over breaching betting rules
Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali banned for 10 months over breaching betting rules
Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali has been banned from football for 10 months, the president of the Italian football federation (FIGC) has confirmed. Gabriele Gravina insists the Newcastle midfielder will be suspended for 10 months and follow a rehabilitation programme following an investigation over betting on matches during his time at AC Milan. It means Tonali will miss the remainder of the season for Eddie Howe’s side and be unavailable for Euro 2024, should Italy qualify. “The FIGC Prosecutor and Tonali have reached an agreement which I have already approved,” said the FIGC President. “The agreement consists of a 10-month ban plus eight months of rehab activities and at least 16 public appearances.” The 23-year-old was under investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation, who found the Italy international had broken gambling rules. Tonali, who was signed by Newcastle from Milan for £50m this summer, fully cooperated with the investigation and was handed a reduced sentence. “Rules provide a ban for a few years, but there can be a plea agreement and attenuating circumstances,” Gravina added. “The guys collaborated above and beyond expectations, so we will continue to follow the rules we had adopted.” The midfielder’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, said Tonali suffers from a gambling addiction and the player has agreed to a treatment programme for gambling problems. Tonali’s punishment comes after the Juventus player Nicolo Fagiolo was banned for 12 months, with five suspended, amid the biggest betting scandal to hit Italian football in almost 20 years. Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo has also been investigated by authorities.
