The Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes is going to take over the baseball world during the offseason. David Bednar has done his part to bring him to Pittsburgh.
Shohei Ohtani has spent the last few seasons establishing himself as one of the most talented and generational players to ever come through the MLB. At the conclusion of the 2023 season, the Japanese sensation will become an unrestricted free agent, beginning a bidding war for the ages.
Each team in the MLB has their own sales pitch that could try to lure the two-way star to their organization. These ideas range from money to winning all the way to how he would enjoy their city.
There really is no limit to the pitches that will be thrown toward Ohtani during and after the 2023 season, but David Bednar of the Pirates has an early candidate for the best (and most convincing) sales pitch to Ohtani.
David Bednar uses a Pittsburgh staple as his sales pitch to lure Shohei Ohtani to the Pirates
Bednar was asked about what he would say to Ohtani, if given the opportunity, in order to lure him to Pittsburgh. The closer's response didn't disappoint.
"We put fries on everything," Bednar said simply, per Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Honestly, it would be quite hard for Ohtani to deny such an eloquent cuisine tradition. Coming from Japan, Ohtani has seen his fair share of culture that is represented in the food he eats and was raised on. Japan has a rich history of culture and cuisine that is almost unmatched around the world.
But none of their traditions are quite the same as what Ohtani would receive in Pittsburgh. There really is no tradtion quite like "fries on everything".
It's a pretty enticing offer, if you ask me. We'll have to see if the message reaches Shohei Ohtani in order to gauge his response.
