Carlo Ancelotti confirms Eduardo Camavinga position

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti confirmed Eduardo Camavinga will be mainly utilised as a midfielder in the future, despite impressing at left-back last season.

The 20-year-old joined Real Madrid in 2021 for a reported fee of €40m from Rennes, primarily with a view of the French international becoming one of the long-term successors for Los Blancos' famed midfield trio of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro.

Camavinga made 17 starts during the 2022/23 campaign as a midfielder, however his most eye-catching performances arguably came when he was utilised as left-back. In the nine appearances at left-back, filling in for Ferland Mendy, Camavinga thoroughly impressed to the point where he was being considered one of the better full-backs in world football by the end of the season.

Speaking to Diario AS about Camavinga's future role at the club, Ancelotti confirmed that, despite his impressive showings in defence, the French international is still seen as a midfielder by the club.

"He played at full-back as an emergency due to Mendy’s injury. Mendy is doing very well now, as is [Fran] Garcia, who can contribute a lot to us," the Real coach said.

"Camavinga is a midfielder with lots of quality and the idea is to use him as an interior or a pivot, not as a full-back. If Mendy and Garcia are there, he’s not going to play in defence."

As well as re-signing former academy player Garcia from Rayo Vallecano as a new full-back option, Los Blancos have also added some extra quality and competitions for places in midfield, signing the prodigal Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund for up to €134m.
